ized the opportunities of a merchant
tailoring department In connection
with his ready-made business and at
once opened up a modern tailor shop
with first class cutters and journey
men tailors, and at once took the lea 1
and has continued as the loading mer
chant tailoring establishment In the
Willamette valley. Mr. Bishop has at
all times endeavored to push to tlio
front the sale of Oregon made fabrics,
where possible. One of the special
fontures of the suits made In this
shop Is the c'ass of linings and trim
mlngs used. In 18 years business
never a comnlalnt about Inferior trim
mings to properly hold a suit In good
shape until the suit Is discarded. This
shop has In the past and does now

U. S. senators, congressmen, judges of

oldest gas plants on the Pacific coast
having been built In 1865. While at
the start the plant and the output was
small, there has been a steady Increase
In the use of gas for fuel and lighting
Since gas behn to replace the use of
wood and coal for domestic consump
tion, the demands have been so great
that early in 1912, the plant was en
larged for the third time In Its hlBtory.
On account of the better quality of
gas, which is produced from coal, It
was decided to continue manufactur
ing coal gas rather than gas made
from crude oil, although the latter

were being laid In districts hitherto

modern conditions. With an expendi
ture of $10,000 In 1911 and $10,000 now
being expended in the same way this
present summer, In all $30,000 has
been invested In the gas plant to Im
prove one of the essential manufactur
ing institutions In Salem.
Under the liberal policy of expan
sion, Instituted since Mr. W. M. Hamil
ton became the local manager, It Is
expected that Salem will Boon take
rank ns one of the leading cities In
the Northwest in the amount of gns
consumed, ns nearly fifty years ago it
