"The flglit Is already half won. There Is nothing to say about what In left There have ' been and there lrlll be things happening, not only every day and every hour." Surrounded by a crowd that Jammed his rooms to suffocation, William J. Bryan today uttered the above defi ant declaration when asked to outline his plans for continuing the fight on the Murphy-Taggart-Sullivan combi nation of conservatives who brought about his defeat for the temporary chairmanship of the Democratic na tional convention. 'Bryan had been np since B o'clock. He was without coat, vest or collar and the perspiration was running down his face In streams. Dut he declared that be intendB fighting throughout the convention, not only for the progressive platform, hut for the progressive candidate that, ho declared, the Democracy of the country was expecting to have named. A determined effort was made to day by the Wilson men to got Bryan to come out openly for their candi date. ' He refused, and called atten tion to the fact that he Is instructed by the Nebraska Democracy to vote for the namlnatlon of Speaker Clark. But that there is an understanding between the Wilson leaders and the Nehraskans Is certain. Many of the later'g closest friends say opin'v wearing Wilson buttons, and thore Is always a hearty welcome at the Bry an rooms for tho Wilson boomers. Bryan was In earnest conversntlnn for some time today with Herman Kidder; of New York; J. Et. Lamb, of Indiana;' Senator Gore, of Oklahoma ; Senator Luke hen, of Tenessee; Sen ntor Culberson, of Texas, and a num her of others before going to the meeting of the sub-conimltee on res olutions. Bidder was reported to have tried to "feel the Commoner out," on the question of candidates, but did not re celve much information. With some other ipersrna it was reported thnt Bryan discussed the plan of certain p ogresstres who are Instructed for Clark, to chnnge their votes beforo the roll call is announced on either the first or second ballot If Now York's 90 votes are cast for Clark. Those delegates, It is undorst)od ssy Buch Lotion by New York would fcn an admission that Clark dealt with Murphy on the temporary chairman hlp In return for promises of sup port, was well founded. It Is understood thRt Bryan posi tively refused to express any opinion regarding the wisdom of such a plan. I have not discussed candidates with anybody." was Bryan's comment today upon a rumor that he would "bolt" the convention If either Wilson or Kern Is nominated. Bryan Ib throwing cold water on all "bolt" talk, and Industriously preaching harmony. Pendleton Cnle sweeps over East ern Oregon, damaging alfalfa, now being cut Having acquired the property of the Portland, Eugene & Eastern, the Sa lem, Falls City & Western and the Canby-Molalla railroads, the South ern Paciflo company, through E. C. Calvin, general manager, announced yesterday that it is prepared to ac cept a common user user franchise for double track on Fourth street, Port land, and proceed with the electrifi cation of 340 miles of roads Involving an expenditure of $8,000,000. ' This, together with the work now being done on the new lines between Eugene and Coos Bay and between Natron and Klamath Falls makes the aggregate authorized expenditure of the Southern Paciflo in the state for the next two years more than $20,000,-000. Robert E. Strahorn, who so suc cessfully built the North Coast lines In Washington for the Hariman Inter ests, will have charge of the construc tion work on the new electric lines. Large forces of men are already em ployed, the money has been aproprl- ated and actul deavelopment will be pushed to early completion. Confirmation Is Official. While railroad men In the North' west have understood for a long time that the Southern Paciflo Interests have been back of A. Welch and hiB associates, who have promoted the' Portland, Eugene & Eastern, Mr. Cal vin's authoritative staement on the subject yesterday was the flrBt oflcial admission by the Hariman people that they really are directing the work of the Welch enterprise. 1 it became generally known a year ago that L. Oerllnger and his part ners, who have operated the Salom, falls City & Westein, really were get ting ready to pass their property In to the hands of the Southern Pacific. It was not until within the last few months, however, that the Harrlinnn system secured possesion of a suffi cient amount of stock to gain absolute control of the road. Tho lino that is being built between Canby and Mololla has been conceded a Harrlman enterprise from the start, btit even that was not admtted as such by the Harrlman officials nntll yes terday. Network of Lines In Plans. Now they are ready, Mr. Cnlvln says, to proceed with the rapid devel opment of all these roods, extending the Portland, Eugene & Eastorn from Monroe through Alsea to Eugene and building numerous branch and con necting lines through the Willamette valloy, so that so omplote network of electric roads will sorve the numerous prosperous nnd growing communities of the valley, all of which are tributary to Portland. "We are now acquiring right of way for a dnuble-trark line, with room for four tracks eventually, between Oswego and Aurora, from latter point sn olectrlo line will be built parallol to our present steam line to Salem Wc also havo under construction a line from Canby to Molalla and from Salem to Fir, and will build a connection be tween Molalla and Sllvorton, provid ing a throuxh line from Cunby via Sll vorton to Salem, Sulrm II ranch Contemplated. 'This development, which has hern authorised, will give us an intemr bon electrical system of 340 miles, with an addition 35 miles of city lines In Suleni, Albany, Eugene nnd Coivnl lli. We have under contemplation as well a branch line southerly from Sa lem to serve rnpldly-doveloplng ter ritory, and a branch line southeasterly from Lebanon.
