The (lrnt of the delegates to the eleventh biennlul convention of the General Federation of Woman's clubs which convenes next Tuesday, reached San Francisco yesterday. Up to that time more than a thousnnd uelegntes had sent In credential cards and hod been assigned at slate headquarters. It Is expected thut at least two thousand women, repre senting nearly every state "In the union, will be present when the con vention Is called to order. Somebody once said Colonel Roose velt was the greatest little precedent buster that ever Presldented at the "White HotiBe. It didn't look like Roosevelt had left a Blngla solitary measly little precedent unshattered when William Howard Taft moved into the White House. Remains of the 'dead and decaying precedents littered the lawn, or were decently packed away In the cellar and a miscellaneous collection of 553 big sticks, which adoring friends had forwarded the Unprecedented Predecessor. Hurriedly moving over to the Exec utive offices, with a copy of the Con stitution under his arm, Taft started I right In on March 4, 1909, for a little precedent punishment himself. Dur ing the next three years Taft has Jug gernaut'ed over more precedents than T. R. ever dreamed of doing. As a matter of fact, before he made that 'trip to the executive office (with the constitution under his arm) he had already scored one. Nobody ever heard of a president's wife riding down Pennsylvania avenue with her hus band following the Inauguration. It wasn't customary. But Taft saw that It was done. He always admitted that If It badnt been for Mrs. Taft be would have accepted Colonel Roose velt's opportunity to place him on the supreme bench, and never entered the presidential race. So he wanted Mrs. Taft to enjoy his Inauguration causes lack of energy and forgetful ness. HARVARD IS AGAIN A VlilOER New London, Conn., June 22. Row ing a masterful race the great Harv ard crew defeated Yale In the varsity eights late yesterday In one of the prettiest races ever seen on the Thames. Harvard's time was 20:30. just 30 seconds more than the record. Yale got away In the lead but at the two mile point Harvard had forged ahead and from that time had' tbe victory in hand. In. the last mile Yale showed great spirit and tried to close the gap but In vain. Harv ard finished' strong and ealsly, while Yule was exhausted. Tang, filed recently. These suits originated over alleged damages done the three men at the time the trusses collapsed at the Car negie libiary In March last. The con tractor alleges that, the accident was accidental anad that the workmen were experts having as good knowl edge of the character of the work as the foreman or superintendent In charge. The contractor alleges that theacicdent was not his fault and that the men must suffer the consequen ces of what the contractor calls their cwn neglect. Commercial He made General Leonard Wood, a doctor and not a West Pointer, head of the army. Ho served refreshments nt the state receptions. He discarded White House carriages, and persuaded congress to appropriate for automo biles. He appointed two democrats to the supreme bench, making one of them chief Justice. He started the "no luncheon" fnd. He added a cow to the landscape features of his back yard. He put an economy commission to work. He got congress to lay out a fine boulevard on the Potomac and ordered the Marine Band to play there I regularly. He cut out foreign serv ants at the White House, and Installed Sons of Ham. He busted to Infinitesi mal molecules all previous records for presidential traveling. He made T. R.'s strenuous feats of train hustling look like a frayed tmitat Ion. There are so many other little pre cedents all dead and gone that It would require the space of one of the Roosevelt messages to chronicle them. And the peculiar part of It Is, that Taft never did very much precedent smnshlng before he became president, He had the "Judicial teniierament.' He came by It naturally. His father was a lawyer, and at one time secre tary of war. The son stnrted a lawyer after graduating, with honors, and at the age of 21, from Yale, In '78. He got his first political Job In 1881, and has been holding appoluttve or elective offices ever since. . He was "Roosevelt's candidate" for the presidency. The Strenuous One got behind him, heljied his campaign, and rejoiced In his election. If Roose velt had his renown for certain dental characteristics, Taft's smile has be come a catch phrase. It ls contagious that Binlle It begins with an Inward chuckle thut wobbles the third and lowermost presidential chin, and then crops out with a subdued chortle. A grayish moustache doesn't hide It either. i. One of the precedents T. R. estab- lRhed that was continued around the White House, was the physical culture stunt. But where Roosevelt mixed It with jlu Jltsu artlBts, wrestlers, prize- rigtiters and fencers lu the White House gym, Taft has an ''exercising expert" Dr. Barker. It Is one long continuous battle with Taft to keep down his weight. The president now weight 320 pound. He doesn't look It because he Is large all over. He diets, too. He doesn't smoke and never touches even the lightest kind ot wines. The physical culture stunt has kept Taft In perfect physical trim.
