Jiison Lee Memorial, (To be dedicated at Sulem, Ore., June 16th.) The Jason Lee Memorial Methodist Episcopal church Is particularly for tunate In having a name all Its own. There Is a Jason Lee church In Seat tle, but nowhere else within the con fines of Methodism Is there another Jason Lee Memorial." When the Rev. James Moore was appointed to the office of district su perintendent of the Salem district, he Immediately recognized that North 8oiem was to be a center of homes; that a great Influx of people would soon be coming in and making this place their permanent abode. At this time there already existed a Method ist Episcopal church in South Salem, known as the Leslie Mothodlst Epis copal church, besides the old Mother Church, which in reality Is the moth er of Methodist churches In this Ore gon country; that to conserve the In terests of Methodism properly in the city something must be done towards having a Methodist church In North Salem. At one of the very first quar terly conferences at First church the subject was broached by him. One member after another was conferred with concerning the matter and fin ally under the leadership of Rev. Moore and the pastor of First church, Dr. Selleck, a meeting was held In the church of God In North Salem for the purpose of thoroughly discus sing the affair, by those who lived In the Immediate neighborhood. There wns scarcely a dissenting voice. It was decided by those present that a Methodist church In North Salem was necessary and a board consisting of the following men was appointed: D. H. Wyant, K. C. Minion, J. R. Near, Clayton I'nruh, and L. P. Bennett, with power to draw up articles of In corporation. The name selected by these men at the suggestion of Dr. Moore was "Jason Lee Memorial Methodist Episcopal church." At the MUlsboro annual conference September, 1910, W. C. Stewart was appointed pastor of the newly named church which was as yet only a name He arrived on the field and called on the officials and Immediate ly broached the subject of a new church. Years before this time a saint of God, Rev. John Roory, se lected and purchased a couplo of lots which had been held in trust by the trustees of the First church, These were now deeded to the trustees "of the new organization. But this was all the property they owned. In fact there was not a church organiza tion, only a set of trustees. They had erected a temporary building on the ground, 30x60, and on the 16th day of October, 1910, the first reli gious service was held. The first Sunday there were 87 present at Sun day school. The school and church grew. New members were added weekly. About this time II. N. Black, an architect from Portland was cn gnged to draw a set of plans for the Memorial church. Later his plans were accepted and arrangements were immediately made for raising funds. On the 18th of December, J.'i.OOO were subscribed by the mem bers of the new church, not yet three months' old. Along In January the contract was let to F. B. Roberta for $3,1 60. He began to make concrete blocks for the structure In February. On the 31st of March the ground was broken for the building with appro priate exercises and with great re joicing. On the tenth of May the cornerstone wns laid by President lloman, of Willamette I'nlverBlty, and Dr. Hancher, of Iowa. At this time the subscription was brought up to about $7000. The summer brought ninny experiences, some of which were pleasant and others were very discouraging. In November revivals were held by the pastor with the as sistance of Rev. W. H. Williams, of Bun Jose, Cal. About 70 were added to the church as a result of this meeting. New life was Instilled and the church bounded forward again. One of the sweetest experiences tho writer ever had was when he, on one 8unday afternoon, received about 60 peopto Into tho fellowship of the church and baptized about 25. The winter months were full of careful planning and ths time was set for the dedicating of the now building, which Is to occur on the 15th and ICth of June, 1912, under tho leader- now? can you expect to be healthy If you allow the stomach to be come weak liver sluggish and bowels constipated. Of course, there have been the downs as well as the ups, but God's people have always been a determined peo ple and now on the 16th day of June we are to go forward to larger and better things, with a larger and broader vision of what Christ has for each of us to do. We will not be sorry In after years that we had a part on this memorlable day. The following is the program which Is to be rendered at the dedi catory exercises which will occur on the 15th and 16th of June: Saturday June 1510 a. m., Praise service; 10:30 a. m., "The Influence of Pioneer Methodism on Oregon," J. D. Lee, Portland Or.; 11 a. m., "The Pioneer Preacher," A. J.Jos'yn, Can by, Or,; 11:30 a. m., Dr. Homan, president of Willamette University; 12:15, lunch; 2 p. m., Praise service; 2:15 p. ni., "Jason Lee," Judge More land, Salem; 3 p. m., "The Provi sional Government," C. B. Bagley, Seattle, Wash.; 3:45, Praise service; 4 p. in., "Jason Lee as the founder of Willamette University " Hon. C. B. Moores, Portland, Or.; 4:30 p. m., Dr. Homan; 7:30 p. in., Reminiscences, C. H. Walker, Geo. H. Hlmes and others- Sunday, June 169:30 a. m., Sun day school; 10:45 a. in., sermon by Dr. Homan, president of Willamette University; 12:30, lunch; 2:30 Lay men's meetings in which prominent laymen of the conference will pre side; 7 p. m., the Federated Leagues of Sulem will have charge with a most unique program; 8 p. m. the church will be dedicated by Dr. Ilol- mun. Thus you will see that the pioneers will have the whole of Saturday and this will be known as distinctively "Pioneers' Day." Many letters have been Bent out to the various pioneers of the state and many of them have stated that they wanted to be pres ent on that day. We desired to have tho names of many of them to be Inscribed in a granite slab which Is desired to be placed in the building. Thus far only about a hundred have responded and we hope to have many more on that day. Owing to this, no provision has been made to have the slab In the building at that time be cause there Is no way as yot of tell ing how large It will have to be. We want this to be the Pioneers church or rather their Memorial. ' The church lias grown from a mere handful until now we have a membership of 175 as the records will show. There are 170 In the Sun day school with 10 energetic classes. There is an Epworth League of about 45 members which is one of the real live wires of the church. The In dies Aid Society Is Industrious and always busy. A. W. II. M. S. has been recently organized with nearly 30 members- With the new building all modern In every way and this cleared of dobt, with the prospects which are ahead of us, considering the growth of the city of Salem, a great future lies ahead of the Jason Lee Memorial church. The pastor has many things planned for himself and his people to do when the work of construction and church building Is done. This Is one of the' great historical events In the hlatory of the Method Ism for the Pacific Coast. The Meth odists of Sulem are desirous of hav ing many of the Methodists of othor cltlos and from other parts of Ore gon present at the dedicatory exer cises on the Kith and 16th of June Pacific .Christian Advocate.
