D. Babcock, clerk of the corporation department of the office of secretary of state, and should the i ate continue, the governor will un der the law be compelled to dissolve about one-fourth of them. In all there are 18,000 corporations one the books of the corporation de partment, but only 7,000 of them are alivo and engaged in business. With 500 of them so far reporting having gone Into bankruptcy or Into the hands of the receiver, the number Is destined to be considerably reduced If the rate keeps on. Though the 11, 000 dead corporations have been dis solved by the governor, It is neces sary for the clerk to keep their names on the books, for they are subject to re-lnstatement whenever they desire to resume business. One bad feat ure of the law along this line is that It prevents any new corporation from assuming any of their names. The law at one time provided that when a corporation had been dissolved for two years, that Its name should po off the books, but this law has teen amended so that they can remain on them now Indefinitely. An effort will be made to amend this feature of tha law at the next legislature. WILL TAKE UP THE MATTER OF WOOL RATES Learning that no permission has teen granted railroad companies to deviate from the recent decision made by the lnter-state commerce commission relative to the wool rates, the members of the railroad commission have asked that a meet ing of tho executive committee of the Oregon Wool Grwers' association meet at Baker June 20, and decide t'pon what steps are to be taken with relation to the matter. The interstate commission in Its decision held that shipments of wool from Eastern Oregon points to Port land should be fourth class, the rate prior thereto having been second class. , Apparently Ignoring the de cision, the railroad companies have proceeded to file their tariffs and fixed the rate at third class. The railroad commission at first believed that permission had been granted them by the interstate commerce commission to do so, but finding that It had not, they decided to take the subject up with the wool growers at once. If warn IT CANNOT USE GAME FUNDS TO PAY BOUNTIES In an opinion rendered by Attor ney General Crawford at the request of the secretary of state, It Is held that the state game and fish commis sion can not legally use funds be longing to the game and fish protec tive fund and to pay an additional bounty for Bcalps of cougars and wild cats. The scalp bounty law provides that when either animal is killed that the county clerk will pay a bounty upon the presentation of the scalp. Anx ious, however, to stimulate the ex termination of the animals, the com mission offered an additional bounty of $10 for every scalp, but the at torney general holds that the money can not be used in this manner but only to propagate and protect the game and fish of the state Catarrh Cannot Be Cored with LOCAL APPLICATIONS, as thoy cannot reach the seat of the disease. HUMPHREYS CASES WILL BE APPEALED With a stay of execution granted yesterday, attorneys for Charles and George Humphrey, convicted and sen tenced to hang for the murder of Mrs. Eliza Griffith, are now free to prose cute an appeal to the supreme court. The action takes from the shoulders of Governor West the necessity of act ing on their reprieve pending a vote on the antnl-capttal punishment bill, of whjch he is the author, and which he will have placed on the ballot this fall. Prison authorities declare that both prisoners have shown no concern, de spite the fact that the time for their execution was rapidly approaching. Two reasons are assigned for this. Some declare that they are too Ignor ant to appreciate the gravity of the situation, and other declare that they realize that Governor West would nev er permit the noose to fasten Itself about their necks until the people have voted on the. question of abolish ing capital punishment. DECEIVING THE SIGNERS jSAYS MR, MALE E. J. Naale, a member of the typo graphical union here, and also a mem ber of the state printing force, makes the declaration that circulators of an amendment which It is sought to have Initiated amending the state printer's flat salary bill are deceiving signers Into the belief that the amendment, If passed, will not put the original bill Into effect until after the expiration of the term of State Printer Dunlway. Prior to an element of the local union opposing its action In voting to use funds belonging to the union to assist In financing the bill, he de clares, but little Interest waB paid to the matter. That, however, he says, has called the public's attention to the subject, and reports are rife to the effect that circulators are making mis representations of the facts to sign ers. TRY SKIN ADSORPTION INSTEAD OF COSMETICS (From the Woman Militant.) The constant use of rouge nnd pow der invites a coarsened, roughend condition of the skin eruptions, en larged pores and wrinkles. If you've learned this from experience, sup pose you quit cosmetics and try what I recommend. Ask your druggist for an ounce of ordinary mercollzed wax and begin using this tonight. Apply liko cold cream, washing It off In the morning Keep this up for a week or two. The wax will literally absorb the coarso, colorless or blemished top skin, but so gradually as not to discommode you at all. Just as gradually the clear, velvety, naturally-tinted nn derskln comes to the surface. And mercollzed wax becomes your ever lasting friend, For those wrinkles and large pores make a face bath by dissolving an ounce of powdered saxollte In a hnlf plnt witch hazel- This has remark able astringent and tonic propel ties, and beneficial results come quickly. More on Now! says a policeman to a street crowd, and whacks heads If It don't. "Move on now," says the big, harsh mineral pills to bowel congestion and suffer ing follows.
