The Oregon state board of dental examiners completed Its June meet ing Saturday. The examinations were held at the state penitentiary, where the applicants for licenses demonstrated their Bklll by working on the prisoners. Approximately $2000 worth of den tal services were performed by the 48 applicants during the three days of practical work. This work was done entirely free of charge and at least 150 prisoners had their teeth placed In order by the young men. This Is the first time that such an examination has been held In any of the state Institutions, and In view of the fact considerable confusion- was oxpected. Every one, however, was agreeably surprised at the smooth ness with which the examinations were conducted, and the prisoners were especially surprised and grateful. On the last day of the examination the prison authorities served a lun cheon for the applicants In the pri son's main dining room at which time Governor West took occasion to thank the young men for their ser vices. Official dispatches received here declare that Havana Is near a race war. Speaker Ferrera, of the Cuban house of representatives, is here pleading for more time'1 in which to crush the rebel lion before the United States Inter venes In Cuba. President Tuft arrived from Hamp ton Roads at noon, and Immediately discussed the Cuban situation with members of his cabinet and other officials. Frank Ceol, an Italian furmer, his wife and daugh ter have been held to the grand jury for assault with intent to murder their neighbor, W. C. Daley, aged pioneer of Jackson county, and nomklnee for county commissioner. Daley was pa trollng his Irrigation ditch, which sup plies farmers of Lake creek district, when attacked from behind by Ceol, who felled him, gagging him with a handkerchief, while the wife, armed with a spade, and the daughter with a hoe, unmercifully beat Daley, cracking his skull and cung flesh from mus cles. 8utherlln farmers are planting lots of vegetable which will be bandied by a company, by the recently dis covered "Keepfresh" method. When the answer to the Oregon University case which is now being prepared is filed it will admit that the signatures to the referendum pe titions by seven circulators and com prising about 3,000 names, are frau dulent and void In contemplation of the law. This was the statement made Sat' urday by Attorney General Crawford and W. S. U'Ren, who are preparing the answer. The complaint In the case Is brought In the name of John H. McNary, as district attorney, to comply with the recent ruling of the supreme court, and save for this is the same as the old complaint. When the state answered, .It denied fraud In any of the petitions, but thlB time the attorneys decided that the better plan would be to admit fraud whether It was plain that the names were fraudulent and then go before the court strictly on the merits of the case. With the view of expediting the case and getting a decision from the supreme court before the general election, the formality of filing do- murrers will be gone through and Judge Galloway be aBked to rule upon them without argument Wherever possible It will be stipulated that the evidence adduced in the former case shall be used in-thls one. Both sides contemplate Introducing some new evidence adduced In the former case Bhall be used In this one. Both sides contemplate Introducing some new evidence, and after It Is Introduced, the case will be submitted to the judge without argumont, the assump tion being that his ruling will be the same as before, the point upon which the case was reversed having been compiled with In the new complaint. Should the supreme court decide adversely to the university again and the decision not come before the election 1b over, then It Is admitted that the appropriations would be held up for another two years.
