Visited Normal School
The training department of the
state normal at Monmouth held a
session of school Saturday for the
purpose of giving teachers and oth
ers interested In school work an op
portunity to witness the method of
handling the work there. Supt W.
M. Smith, of this county attended the
meeting from Salem, na well as nine
pupils from the teachers' training
class of the high schools. They
drove over by team and report hav
ing a good time and that the day was
well spent, having received much ben
efit from work presented.

Improve Miller Works
The city of Woodhurn having, at a
recent election, decided to purchase
the city water works, is now extend
ing the mnlns, and is also building a
water tower and tank sufficient to
hold 60,000 gullons of water, which
tank Is 110 feet In height. Woodhurn
Is the second city in size In the coun
ty, having about one mile of paved
street si as good as any in the state,
while It Ib making other substantial
Improvements, in t tie way of build
ings, of a private and public charac

The fire department was called to
the Y. M. C. A. building Saturday
night to extinguish a chimney fire. No
damage done.
Hurled In New York
Announcement was made last week
that the body of Homer Davenport,
the fanions cartoonist, who died re
cently In New York City, would be
brought to Oregon for burlul, but this
Is erroneous, as the funeral was held
yesterday and Interment was at New
York City.

Peter Graber had his three-horse
team out for trial and exercise this
morning with the result, that he Is
well convinced that he has as tine a
team as can be had for fire service.
He tried the team hitched to the hose
wagon for eight blocks with highly
satisfactory results. Mr. Graber says
