R. IN MASSACHUSETTS. The bravest and most encouraging campaign in the Old Bay State on the part of Roosevelt resulted in a moral victory. He carried the state for the delegates at large, but the" state expressed a preference for Taft on the popular vote by a plural ity. ' Roosevelt promptly declared that all the delegates from that state accept the expressed will of the people, and all vote for Taft. , , This the delegates at large refused to do, and there will be an effort to get a judicial interpretation of the law on the matter. Roosevelt's campaign was courageous because it was not timid and time-serving, but far-reaching in its moral tone for better conditions. . . . , He spoke in sixteen manufacturing cities in one day and told the laboring men and. women that they were entitled to im proved conditions. . , , He boldly and unequivocally advocated an eight-hour day and the state-regulated workingman's compensation act without liti gation. , ' , The people will find that Roosevelt has the courage to lay down his principles and abide by the verdict of the people on them . i . Furthermore he maintains his position that by a people s gov ernment he means the abolition of special privileges m the name of government and legislation. . , If this country is to remain a republic that is the only line. THE MADE IN OREGON CAMPAIGN. The campaign for a larger consumption of products of the home industries is beginning to bear fruit in Oregon. ' The two-page advertisement of the Bowman clothing stores at Portland of Made in Oregon woolen goods is an eye-opener, Mr. Bowman has demonstrated that the Made in Oregon idea bears promulgation, and produces results in the way of business. He went to Portland and clerked in a clothing store a few years and today has four large stores and is rated at a quarter of a million. He buys the products of three Oregon woolen mills and has the cloth made up into stylish clothing in the large eastern fac lories. (It would be better to make the clothing here, but that time is coming.) Like the Oregon Life Insurance company, he has proven that the business of the people of Oregon is worth going after. (Consider that the Sun Insurance company, of London, takes $50,000 a year out of Oregon.) He is only one of hundreds of merchants who are catching onto the fact that the Oregon field is the best field in the world. Contrast with the success of the Oregon Life and the Bowman stores the following adverse facts : v A million dollars of Reed Institute buildings to be made of im ported brick. , The Multnomah county court house built ot Indiana sand stone. The new supreme court building at Salem to be built of im ported terra cotta and imported steel work. . The Eastern Oregon asylum built almost entirely of material brought from Spokane, The beautiful federal building at Salem is constructed of gran ite and snndstone from Jackson and Douglas counties. (The finest skyscrapers are biult of Willamette valley pressed brick.) At Salem the other night, on motion of G. Stolz, a pioneer manufacturer, the Maroin county Manufacturers'association was orgnnized. . , The time has come for all taxpayers to Mt up and demand that public money be spent for the encouragement of Oregon indus tries. . . There is little excuse for sending away for expensive ami heavy building material, to be paid for out of money taken from the Oregon taxpayers. The Made in Oregon idea is being promulgated by the manu facturers association, and the campaign Is to keep money at home and have larger and better factories and larger and bet ter payrolls. WHY TAXES Dropping six men from the salary roll of a state institution is only a pointer why taxes are so high in Oregon. That institution will probably run along just as well and the only difference there will be the reduced time making out vouch ers. Tho snme thing could be done in almost any other department of the Htate government, and many other public service branches. One man in the attorney-general's office, authorized to hire help when needed, could do all the legal business of the state. A first assistant and a second assistant draw salaries, and. then other persons are employed to carry on litigation. The presence of General Odell at the end of a long correspond ence shows that he has been employed on state land mutters. So it goes on and the dear people are faked by the politicians for soft Hiiups, and government becomes a load for father. THE FEDERAL OFFICES SECURE. The Orcgonian heaves a High of relief that, with Bourne beat en, the federal office holding graft is secure. They are all to be undisturbed in their places providing they will be good and plav the machine game against the people. There is not one of these offices but could be cleaned out and overhauled and the expense of conducting it be reduced. But that is not what they are for, and the machine thanks God they have been saved for political purposes. Those who were opposed to Taft four years ago are now for Taft, but thev will be for Roosevelt if he should be elected. They arc for perpetuation of the graft, for more fees, bigger naiades, life tenures, shorter hours, more deputies and clerks. That is their business, and they look upon politics as the handle of the pump to keep tho stream flowing. There is no doubt but that a general shake-up of the federal officials would show not only corruption, but a large nuumber of dead soldiers on the payrolls. For truculent service to the machine the bosses would per petuate all this inefficiency at public expense and rulo tho people while plundering them. :: Make Want Advertising Your Banker i Journal want ads (bring quick results R. "Green Stockings" has been performed by this distinguished actress in no less than three Ts'ew York theaters this season and it will be the play In which she will present herself here. Miss Anglin Is conceded to be one of America's greatest actresses and her selection of a comedy this season as a relief to the emotional work In which she achieved her early fame, has enabled her to demonstrate that she la possessed of vast talent as a comedienne. The New York critics conceded this talent, and the run of "Green Stockings" there has been lengthy and most profitable. When MIbs Anglin leaves New York, her itinerary will carry her by way of the Middle West, Winnipeg, and the Canadian Northwest, to the Pacific coast. She will play as far as San Francisco, returning east ear ly In June. The same company that has sup ported Miss Anglin during her New York season, Including H. Reeves Smith, will accompany her here.
