WHICH WAY BRETHREN? The Republican party in this presidential campaign stands at the forks of the road. Taft and Roosevelt cannot both represent the party, and they represent diverging tendencies. The Taft tendency is rathr old-fashioned inclination to parti sanship against popular government. Roosevelt stands for the moral side of poltics, as far as mor als can be made to enter practical politics. There is not a representative of the old machine methods but secretly would overthrow the expressed will of the people in Or egon and cast the vote of Oregon for Taft. It is a significant fact that Oregon is progressive by a total vote of 32,087, as against 20,405 for Taft. That is the combined Rooseveit and La Follette vote is 52,492 against 20,505 for Taft. Yet the reactionaries and standpatters cannot see anything significant in this and want the party to remain reactionary and nominate a reactionary candidate. Oh, brethren, why will you return to the fleshpots of Egypt instead of coming out of the wilderness? o- THEY CAN'T GET ENOUGH. The head of the state school ring says he don't see how the University can get along without that large appropriation. That is not the question at issue in the people taking the ref erendum, and he is trying to dodge the whole question. The question is can a commonwealth with only about 100,000 , taxpaying citizens and voters put up a million every two years for so-called Higher education? The gang do not care what they take they are like the leeches daughters in the Scripture, crying for more and more. They have no conscience and no sense of honor in dealing with public approprations and the people have got to fight them The big school push sends the same man back to the legisla ture who engineered the over-reaching game to the detriment of the university. The school gang that does these things has no sense of intel ligence except to grab and graft and absorb and cry for more and more. These men should be rebuked by the people, and the whole proposition be put on a sane basis where the people can support these schools. When those in authority by vote of the people do nothing but scheme "to burden the taxpayer, what can the people do but kick? EDITORIAL NOTES. Good industries mean more to Oregon than bad politics. The people are asking why all this to-do over the champion land monopolist of Oregon ? Thirteen men on Dead Man's Island will all vote for Teddy. Why not clear one side of the street and let the reckless rid ers ride? The new book by the Bobbs-Merrill Company, "Ffau,' is by far the most refreshing book of the season. It is crisp, sur prising and entertaining throughout. Strange, that its moral tone, like Esther Damon, and many other novels of the day is an attack on standpat orthodoxy. There is fun all through it. The heroine Is a circus girl and lion-tamer and her greatest feat is taming a pair of human lions. We are aU exceeding the speed limit. From the Titanic to the boy on the bicycle we want to go too fast for our own good. The friends of the public schools in Salem should consider fnding a first-class man to run for school director in June. If none of the present board will resign the people should consider the advisability of the recall and get our school administration on a different basis. Five years is too long to serve without any appeal to the people. School taxes and expenses have gone up until there must be a halt. If you have property or business in Salem, and see nothing in securing a half million dollar endowment for a college at Salem, you have very little faith in the future of this town. The housewifo should ask her grocer for a list of family sup plies "Made in Oregon," and then buy from that list. That is the way to build up Oregon payrolls. As a whole the Republican ticket that has been nominated in Marion county in one of the best ever selected. The people do not care so much for geography as they do for efficiency. Pos sibly a few men on the ticket could bo improved on, but that is always the case. The people under the direct primary system have the same right to another selection that they always had under the convention system. In fact, it is easier to boat a pri mary nominee than a convention nominee, if the people have made a mistake. Another good roads committee is getting up petitions at Tort land. Fortunately that is about as far as it ever goes. We have yet to see a state or a county bonding proposition that would re sult In anything equitable in the way of permanent highways. "The- Best Physician for the Blood" " 'A woman's crown of glory is her hair.' If this is true," says Mrs. Mary Lawyer, Fultonham, N. Y., "my daughter, 19, has a most royal crown, entirely due to Ilood's Sarsaparilhi. When she was a little girl ehe had dreadful sores on her head, which was at one time completely covered. Her hair all came out, and it was impossible to prevent her scratching the inflamed skin. Treatment for a year failed, but when she took Ilood's Sarsapa rilla it made the most wonderful change. The hair came out all new and seemed to push the scabs off, eo that before she took the second bottle her head was all healed and covered with fine silky hair. Since then Ilood's Sarsaparilla has been the standard remedy in our family. It is certainly the best and cheapest physician for the blood I have ever employed for blood diseases." , Hood's Sarsnparllla effects Its iwonderful cures, not simply be cause It contains sarsaparilla, but because It combines the ut most remedial values of mors than twenty different Ingre dients, which are the very reme dies successful physicians pre scribe for the same diseases and ailments, but nre not all found In any other medicine. It will do you good this Spring. Do not buy a substitute. Be sure to get Ilood's, prepared by C. !. Hood Co, Lowell, Mass. Sold by druggists everywhere. Fifteen people, includ ing si chorus girls, present "The Soul KIbs" nl Its new form in 30 minutes. Miss Viv ian Whitman, another soloist, has al ready become a favorite. ''Mepblsto," of course, has a promi nent part In "The Soul Kiss," and a large share of the success of the pro duction Ib owing to the clever filling of that part by George II. Ford.
