C FERHT. HOMELY, TET ADMIRED AND ENVIED HER SECRET The convention crowd in the lobby made a path for her, cast admiring side glances, then with longing eyes followed her to the elevator. It was at the Ponchartrain in Detroit The Incident was recalled when I chanced to sit across table from the woman. What was it about her that caused all that commotion? She wasn't hard some; she was lacking in form and feature. Yet she did seem marvelous ly fascinating. Her complexion must be the secret. Really, I've never be held Its equal. Venturing to pick up acquaintanceship, I learned the rea son. "I know I'm not built for beauty," she confided, "but I've tried to make the most of my one charm. I've learned that men abhor make-ups and artificiality. I bar cosmetics; there are Just two things I ever use and they promote natural loveliness and youthful appearance. "When my complexion begins to age, I get an ounce of mercolized wax at the drug store, apply at night like cold cream and wash It off In the morning. This gradually flakes off the outer skin; then I have a brand new complexion, magnetically beau tiful, as you see. "Wrinkles never bother me. At their inception I bathe my face In a solution made by dissolving an ounce of powdered saxolite In a half-pint of witch hazel. It works like magic." Mona Morrow In Town Tattler. X C. Perry, Druggist o PORTLAND FRANCHISE. (Continued trnm page 1.) Portland deBlres to keep In touch with the surrounding country, It Is abso lutely necessary that the 8. P. be giv en a franchise on Fourth street, un der as liberal terms as possible with the city's best Interest. Salem, In fact all Oregon Is deeply Interested in the matter, and Portland will un doubtedly consider their rights as well as her own best Interests In reaching some terms of agreement, 0VERG0L1E ATTENDANT AND ESCAPE FIVE PATIENTS OF THE SEMI DANGEROUS WARD AT THE ASYLUM OYERrOVt'ER ATTEND ANT AND FLEE ONE CAPTURED OTHERS STILL AT LARGE. Despite that a posse searched practicaly all night last night for August Douglas, Frank Tompkins, W. H. Jones, and Frank Allen who escaped last night from the asylum with W. H. Colin, who was recaptured none of them was apprehended. Of ficers throughout the country have been notified to keep a sharp lookout for them. The escape was effected by the five overpowering William Bagley, attend ant for ward 31, which is classed as a semi-dangerous ward. They had declined to attend the moving picture entertainment which is given on Mon day evenings at the asylum, stating they would rather remain in the ward In order to secure an advantage over Bagley they called his attention to a piece of cloth In the closet. While he waslooklng at It they leaped upon him, and after overpowering him bound' him, and then gagged him by putting a piece of cloth In his mouth. They then took the keys from his person and after locking him tip in the bath room, effected their escape into the yard, where they, were ap parently separated. William Colin who was captured last night was the most docile of the five. He was apprehended near the fair grounds. He was committed from Multnomah county. Douglas Is a Frenchman and has a mania for Incendiarism. He Is a giant, and is considered dangerous. He was committed from Klamath county where . he was arrested for ai-son. He Is guilty of the same crime In various cities on the sound and also In California. He gave his reason for committing the crimes that he was unable to speak English and that he desired to be committed to the asylum so that he might learn It. Tompkins escaped' several weeks ago, this making his second time. He was committed from Clackamas coun ty. Allan was committed from Uma- tlla county and Jones from Washing ton county, and both are dangerous. o ONE MORE OF THE ESCAPES CAPTORED Suffering from a bum which may cause him to lose his arm, Thomas Condon, committed from Multnomah county, and one of the six who es caped from the asylum last night by overpowering the attendant, was brought back to the Institution today from Waconda. ' Last night it was believed that only five had escaped, but this morning revealed that sLx had participated in overpowering the attendant, Condon seems to have separated from the others, and to have gone to Wacon- day, and at an early hour this morn ing he broke into the Oregon Elec tric depot, and, laboring under the de lusion that he was a professor of elec tricity, endeavored to manipulate the switch board. The result was that he received a burn on bis arm extend ing clear to the elbow, and Dr. Stein er was unable to say whether he could save the arm or not Excepting Colin, who was captured last night, the other four are still at large. o CHAMBERLAIN IS NAMED FOR SECOND PLACE The Oregon Democrats did a nice thing in instructing their delegates to the national convention to cast their votes for Oregon's senator, George E. Chamberlain for vice president Oregon once before had a Democratic candidate for the vice-presidency, Joe Lane, who ran on the ticket with Breckenrldge, but was defeated. Of course Oregon has but a small per centage of the nominating vote, but, while hardly a doubtful state, It may in the light of Its electing Democra tic governors and now having a Dem ocratic senator, be classed as a de batable one, and It Is to a state In this class the second place on th ticket will be given, and "Our George" will surely get a big vote, at least all the Democratic contin gent being certain for him and some Republicans. o Flags were at halt mast In Port' land Saturday over the Titanic dls. aster not over defeated candidates. UNITED PHESS LlASID Will. Washington, April 23. Alleged tor ture of American citizens in Mexico is described in dispatches received here from Galveston, Texas, where 47 passengers, all but one citizens of the United States, have arrived from Vera Cruz on the steamer Texas, Many Americans, the refugees reported, have been assassinated by Mexican troops, and their lands and furniture seized. There were only four or five trunks In the party, the clothing and other personal effects of most of the refugees having been seized. . The .announcement from Mexican City that President Madero has ap pointed Senor Calero, former Mexican minister of foreign affairs to succeed Senor Martinez Crespo as ambassador to the United States has caused much astonishment in official circles here. Only a few days ago In reply to the United States note of warning that American lives and property In Moxl- co must be protected, Mexican offi cials told the state department offi cials to attend to their own business, adding that Mexico was fully aware of Its rights and its obligations under the law of nations. strWmay extend to THE COAST Kansas City, April 23.
