Repainting Frlitoi
Tho work of repainting the state
penitentiary Is progressing nicely.
Heretofore the state prison has had
a red paint on It, but when the pres
ent work Is completed it will carry
a coat of gray.
Funeral Services
Funeral services will be held over
the body of M. Erickson at the Cottage
undertaking parlors at 8 o'clock to
night. Mr. Erickson, It will be re
membered, wis killed a week or more
ago, while engaged In pulling stumps
near West Salem.
Paving Center Street
Work has begun on the paving of
Center street. This pavement Is to
be of concrete and Is being laid by
the Oelger Construction Co. The crew
of men began at Fourteenth Btreet and
will work toward the west. The curb
h the first part of the work done, two
blocks having been laid so far. The
work will now be pushed to comple
tion by the contractor.
One of Six Caught
James Johnson, one of the six honor
men who escaped recently from the
gang at work at the tuberculosis Insti
tute, has been captured at Ashland
and an officer has been sent to bring
him back. Johnson was serving a
sentence for robbery committed In
Gilliam county. None of the other
five who escaped have been captured
so far.
Regln Work on Capitol
A gang of 25 or BO men began work
this morning to excavate for the new
state buildings Just east of the state
house. Work will be rushed now on
these buildings and within a short
time a lurge crew will be busily en
gaged In constructing the ' buildings
on this site.
Auto Smashed Muggy
A collision occurred last night at
the corner of HiiBh and South Com
mercial streets between a buggy and
an automobile. Hoth were going In
the same direction, the auto having no
light and excoedlng the speed limit.
The buggy was struck and badly de
molished, breaking the shafts and
tearing the harness off the horse. A
girl by the name of Allen, who was
an occupant of the buggy, was drag
ged about 20 feet, being badly bruised
but not seriously hurt. The occupants
of the buggy were from Oak Grove,
and It was a Portland auto. The
horse being freed from his harness,
broke away and so far ias not been
found.
Fairly Goeil Hall.
A fairly good game of baseball was
played on the local grounds yesterday
between the locals and the Tlmms
Cress team of Portland. The battery
for Salem was the linker brothers, and
for the Tlmms-CresH It was McClel
land nnd C. Illeeg. The local team
showed up fairly well but It still has
some weak spots that need to be
strengthened. The vlBltlng team played
fairly well, but was otitrliisHed by the
locals. The score whs 111 to 6 In favor
of the local team.

wan admitted to probata today. The
estate 1h valued at $11,000, of which

Win. J. Culver are the appraisers.

H., Oscar II. and Normiin Schellberg.

Smashed the Taxi
Last evening as Dan Honey was
driving the large taxi belonging to
B. G. Hoedlghelmer from town to the
depot, It skidded with him at the cor
ner of Twelfth and State street's and
went against the curb. - One of the
rear wheels was completely demol
ished and other damage done, but uo
one was hurt. The driver was going
at a high rate of speed and In making
the turn the rear of the tuxl swung
around so that it made almost a com
plete circle.

This morning in the justice court
W. H. Beeman, one of the men who
held up and robbed Oscar I. Cheno
weth near the show grounds Satur
day night, waB arraigned on a charge
of highway robbery. He waived ex
amination and was bound over to the
grand Jury In the sum of $500. He
was unable to furr.Vh ball and was
confined in the county Jnll. The case
of the woman and the other man
will be postponed until the canvass
ing board completes the count now
