The Capital Journal did not say "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm" was not a "good" play. It said just the opposite, but condemned the mumbling, mushy-mouthed articulation. It is not a work of dramatic art at all. Dramatic art today i the science of parting you and your money moKt quickly. .A few old maids, a farm hand, a stage driver and an old barn are not dramatic art. But even in that kind of a play and a lot of scenery at a dollar jer the audience is entitled to hear what is said. It may have been worth a dollar or two for some merely to see the old stage drive in. But even that satisfaction to those who never saw a stage does not constitute dramatic art. - Is dramatic art rehashing a popular book to coax people to part with their dollars? Sometimes they even Bteal the name of a popular book, like "The Rosary," to coax people's dollars away. The drama is a presentation of real life and human passion in an entertanlng form. o YOUNG MEN FOR ROOSEVELT. At the State University, Agricultural College and Willamette University Roosevelt carried the popular vote two to one. The clean young element of the community would certainly re joice to have Teddy for a candidate. The Capital Journal would not have to exert itself very much to carry this state for Roosevelt if he is nominated. It was only a few years ago that Oregon gave Roosevelt the largest vote ever accorded to any man a candidate for office, either nationally or locally. No local man ever received Buch a complimentary vote as Mr. Roosevelt. Mr. Roosevelt was the recipient, during his incumbency, of more world-wide notice than any president since Lincoln. He reached a point far beyond what the average man could ever1 hope to attain. He will live long with Washington, Lincoln and more of that kind, who will follow him, until the end of time. Ho is one of those strange individuals who have attracted the attention of the world from time to time. His predecessor, Mr. McKinley, was ordinarily popular and of ordinary consequence, rating below Mr. Cleveland! His successor, Mr. Taft, much like McKinley, is a diplomat and lawyer, and one term of this sort of man seems to have sat isfied the American people. Mr. Taft may possess the great ability some newspapers would have you believe, but he certainly lacks the popularity. Ha is not the first man to live and die unappreciated. .. o EDITORIAL PARAGRAPHS. The people wi'.1 not stind for very much politics in the pub lic schools. The Made in Oregon exposition at Albany April 18, 19, 20, will be a ehowlrg of the products of Linn county manufacturers, iind there will bo three evening meetings at the armory, where tho value of industries and industrial education will be expounded by able speakers. Theso speakers are Independent citizens, men who are building up tho state by their enterprises, and who are worthy of tho patronage of the people of Oregon. Booster meetings as were held at the Hotel Marion Monday noon will do a great deal of good for this city, and the attend ance Is growing each week. They are on the Dutch treat order, where each man pays for his own lunch, and expresses his own ideas. There is no set program, and all talk for the upbuilding of the city along progressive lines. The campaign for tho Willamette endowment fund is very well managed by Mr. Hancher. He Is a master of organization and socms to have the confidence of the business men. If all who have not given money to this cause will come through to the ex tent of their moderate ability the task will be easy. If it is left to those who have already given and who always give the result will Ik) a disappointment. There is no reason to suppose that all persons will do their full duty. They never do. But they will come nearer doing that than ever before under the cumpaign as planned by Mr. Hancher. 1 It seems as if the curfew ordinance was emasculated of about all that its projectors tried to accomplish. Well, it may do for a starter, and it can be made moro stringent later. With state school taxes run up to half the total cost of the government, with an armful of textbooks for the children to stagger under, with about three out of five failing in reading, spelling and grammar, with more new Issues Wing framed up, with new courses in gardening, poultry raising, bird study and management of county fairs, with another textbook commis sion to change all the looks, the poorer class of citizens and tax payers may well shudder at the educational outlook. The row over the high school student body should stop. It is giving this city and the high school an amount of bad advertis ing. Undertaking to advertise tho city through the student body Is one thing. Getting a lot of bad advertising is another. -- The Best Prune Land Buy I 1 126 Acres at Includes ill aoree old orchard, 10 acres new orchard. 110 acre In grain; springs and small streams on place; house, barn, eto. flood team, wagon, harness, and all farm Impleuents Included, There Is a school house on the property, The ground lies well, tnd I the finest kind of red soil. 1 oontod eight mllee south of Batem, about 100 yards otf the main Jefferson road. The Oregonlan attacks Senator Bourne because the cotton mills in Falls City in which he Is interested, pay 12.46 per cent dividends. The horse editor of coure knows nothing of the mater, nor of the Oregonlan's business, but it might prove inter esting In this connection, if the Ore gonlan In Its laudable desire to keep the public Informed, would make a statement showing the dividends paid on Oregonlan stock, or capital. It could get this news first hand, and be absolutely correct. A Kansas City Judge haa held In a breach of promise case that In the making of an engagement, the girl must say "yes," and a nod of assent is not sufficient What's the matter with "Oh Georgo! this is so sudden," head on manly bosom, arms around lovely form curtain. Governor Foss, of Massachusetts, thinks he is the dark horse among the Democratic steeds training for the ' presidential race. It is only a question of time, and probably of a very short time, until someone Is killed by autolsts exceed ing the speed limit. The horse edi tor simply suggests to those violat ing the ordinance, that should they kill someone, while violating the law, they will probably face a charge of manslaughter and a term In the pen.
