'"The Coun try Squiro" was the play, which afforded the most pleasing change from vaudeville and pictures. "The Country Squire" is a charming New England comedy, not unlike "The Old Homestead" and "Way Down East." Mr. Wfilard was at his best in the loveable, jolly old "Squire," and his company gave excellent support. Miss Meadows was attractive as "Alice Bassett," and her singing was one of the features of the show. Miss Davis made decided hit as "Diadamah Babbitt." Mr. Ballard was fine as the "doc tor", and the same can be said of Mr. Haldeman as the ''tramp." Miss Alrrta. Miss Stair, Mr. Woodford Biid Mr. Calley made much of their parts and deserve special men tion. The play was presnted with special scenery, and a world of prop erties. The audience at all times was most enthusiastic and voted the performance, one of the best ever given by a stock company in Salem. The play will continue tonight, Tues. day and Wednesday, with "A Gay Deceiver" on Thursday. o HIGH SCHOOL LITERARY SOCIETY The I'.igh School Literary society, which last year gave several excel lent programs to friends and stu dents of the school, appeared before, the student body th's morning, with its first program of the year. All of the numbers were given In a very pleasing manner, and were received with enthusiasm by the audience. President Jewett appealed to the stu. dents in general to support the or ganization, as he cnosldered it one of the most important in the school. FEDERAL COURTS TO PROBE IT tnitid ritss la5id wiri.1 " Hall of Records, Los Angeles, Dec. 4. The federal probe into the Mc Namara case, so far as California is concerned, will begin here within the next few days. The federal grand jury, which is now in session here, has been instructed by the depart ment of justice at Washington to take up the entire case. Following the conference Attorney Regan and County District Attorney Fredericks on Saturday, the tentative plans for the Investigation were ar ranged. District Attorney Fredericks ad mitted today that this investigation is about ready to commence and that he will turn over to the federal au thorities all of the evidence he has. He said that he had no idea what the outcome will be. However, it was learned that in ad dition to the probing of the violation of the interstate commerce act by the McNamaras and the lieutenants in transporting dynamite through the mails there will also be an investi gation cf alleged misuse of mails by the McNamara defense. Just what form this investigation will take Is hard to say. That is a line which may be carried to any length and the assistant federal dis trict attorney that he did not know where the trail might lead. By making the investigation a fed eral one much quicker action could be secured, witnesses could be brought from other states, and it would be an easy matter to rush things through. Regan said that he has been in constant touch with his chief, Dis trict Attorney McCormfck and that they knew just exactly what was be ing done and were working in abso lute co-operation with the department of justice and the officials at Indian apolis. It was certain, he said, that Mc Manigal will be taken to Indianapo lis to testify there and will also tes tify here. Our great-grandmothers kept their locks soft, dark and glossy by using a "sage tea." ; Whenever their hair fell out or took ; on a dull, faded or streaked appear- ' ance they made a brew of sage leaves i and applied it to their hair, with won-! derfully beneficial effect. Nowadays we don't have to resort to old-time, tiresome methods of gathering the herbs and making the tea. This is done by skillful chem ists better than we could do It our selves, and all we have to do is to call for the ready-made product, Wyeth's Sage and Sulphur Hair Rem- j edy, containing sage in the proper strength, with the addition of sul-j phur, another old-time scalp remedy, j The manufacturers of this remedy j authorize druggists to sell It under i guarantee that the money will here-! funded If it falls to do exactly as; represented.
