The real farmers and those who are playing at farming will all be interested in the Farmer's Short Course. It will be held at the Oregon Agricultural College at Corval lis, from January 3 to February 9. There is no state in the Union where there is room for more practical agricultural education than in Oregon. The social features of the Farmer's Short Course are not to be overlooked and everybody who goes has a good time. Send to the college for the proper information about the course and all details as to prices and programs. o Klamath Falls has opened the new White Pelican hotel, and that fine place of entertainment will be a great asset in the fu ture development of the town. Nothing helps advertise a town so much as a good hotel, and themen who put their money into such an enterprise are public benefactors, whether they ever see a dollar of their good moiiey again in this world or not. THE THRESFERMEN AT SALEM. The State Threshermen's Association will be held at Salem on December 7 and 8. This convention, under the management of Phil S. Bates, will be an important gathering. There are about four hundred members, and it is safe to sny half of them will be in the city thi3 week. These men are owners of the machinery for the threshing of all the grain in our state, men of wealth. They are owners of outfits from the individual farm thresh er to the gigantic outfit that makes the season. They use power and have traction engines and cook wagons and teams and payrolls and are manufacturers. The farmer grows the grain, the thresher sacks it, and the teams and railroads market it, and the mills grind it. The Capital City will extend these men a hearty welcome ,and many of our places of business should be decorated in their honor. The threshermen will see one of the finest cities in the North west, and a city where every comfort and enjoyment is to be had.. It was not supposed possible that there could be human be ings in the world in a civilized country capable of doing what the McNamara brothers confess to having done at Los Angeles. It in to the credit of some of the labor organizations that they have condemned these men, and demanded that they receive punish ment according to law for their crimes. There is no doubt but that there has been wholesale deception of the labor organiza tions in regard to these fiends in human form, and a great deal of support been obtained for them and a great deal of sympa thy aroused in their behalf to which they were never entitled. This misrepresentation came largely through the professional la bor agitators who make a living exploiting the organizations. It Bhows how every organization is liable to abuses, and that abuses come mostly through the spirit of commercialism that permeates every human organization. o CINCHING THE AUTOMOBILISTS. The state seems to think they ought to be cinched and run out of the country. First comes the assessor and puts them on the tax list fo gen eral taxation. Then the state enacts a law of forty pages with a state tax appended in the form of a license. Then the cities take a hand and enact a local license ordi nance, taxing the machines again several dollars. The state tells how they may run and not run on the public highways, and making them responsible for accidents. The city ordinance requires them to run in certain ways on the streets, and tell how they must turn corners. On top of all this is a new requirement that an owner must go before a notary public and swear a whole lot. Filling out the blanks and taking the oath will cost a couple of dollars more, and make the owner liable under oath. Verily the life of the man who owns a motor car is hedged about with wonderful inventions, mostly to get his money. TO ESTABLISH A UNIFORM STUDY COURSE W'-.th the view of establishing a uniform couise of study for the bieh ichools of the state, the West ern Division of the State Teachers' association will ho'd a conference at I'ortiand miPecember 8. ! At the present there Is no plan ! under which the course of studies for the schools are prepared, each city superintendent ronowlng out his own ld-.as on the subject The result has been that in soma of the schools the subjects are not wel lenough covered while in others the ;upl!s are tired with too many studies The plan will be to bring about uniformity on the rubjtct- Many prominent educators outside the state will also be in attendance at the conference. o SALEM WILL HAVE TWELFTH CONVENTION Barks Herbs That have grat medkinal power-, are raised to their highest etliclenov-. for purifylnp and enrichi'.g the blocxl, as they are combined in Hood't Sarsa parilla. 40.36 testimonials received by actual court in two years. Socialists claim to have the bal. ance of power in the city election at Grants Pass. Mrs. Ruth Clark, aged 90, died at Lebanon November 6. She was the mother of 13 children. Ralph E. Williams banker of Dal las, and Republican national com mitteeman was married Sunday to Miss Grace L. Noyes. A move is on foot to sow orchard grass on the wornout ranges of Southern Oregon. Eugene is making an effort to have factories established there, and has appointed a committee to work up the movement. A Cottage Grove man has grown a turnip weighing nine pounds and nine ounces . X-RAYS AND SMILES- Unless you go to the polls today and vote, make up your mind that no matter what Is done by the city council, you have no right to kick. John C. Stubbs, for 35 years In the employ of the S. P., will be re tired this week and gp on the com. pany's pension roll, drawing $18 ,000 a vear for life. The public pays the bills. An Oregonian editor opposing Gov ernor West's star.d on capital pun ishment, does a little "commuting" on his own part in an editorial to day, tts follows: "James B. McNamara ought to j hang. There Is no proper, reason.! able or Just alternative for orqial!- fication of this statement. And yet I James B. McNamara in prison for' life, a self-confessed murderer, will do more for the general cause and ! protection of society than v I James B. McNamara on the gallows! protesting his innocence." I I Portland fears a pestilence In her, city Jail If it is reasonably strong It is hard to see how a pestilence could break out . Some queer combinations get intoj the news columns of a newspaper. This morning, for Instance, the Ore-! gonian has nearly two column3 de- voted to the memorial services of the Elks, and following it is a story- un der the head "Elk Carcass Seized," and telling of the confiscating a- big bull elk, exposed for sale In a F"ort land meat market. o DOWNWARD COURSE SAW MILL AT LA GRANDE IS BURNED La Grande, Or., Dec. 1. Francis, late ambassador to Austria Hungary, died at his home here to day In his sixty-eighth year. Denfness Cannot Be Onred by local applications, as they cannot reach the diseased portion of the ear. There Is only one way to cure deaf ness, and that Is by constitutional remedies. Deafness is caused by an inflamed condition of the mucus lining of the eustachian tube. When this tube is Inflamed you have a rumbling sound or Imperfect hearing, and when It Is entirely closed, deafness Is the result, and unless the Inflammation can be taken out and this tube re stored to Its normal condition, hearing will be destroyed forever; nine cases out of ten are caused by catarrh, which Is nothing but an Inflamed con dition of the mucous surfaces. We will give one hundred dollars for any case of deafness (caused by catarrh) that cannot be cured by Hall's Catarrh Cure. Send for circu lars, free. F. J. CHENEY & CO., Toledo, Ohio. Did it ever occur to you that in many instances neatness is a taxable asset? If you do not think so buy a olt here in Salem, turn the weeds under) sow lawn grass seed and put a few flowers around the border. See if $25 put into neat ness does not add five times -that amount'to the taxable and sale value of the lot, It also increases the taxable and sale value of your neighbor's lot, Why? Simply for the same reason that a bright Salem girl does not want a slov enly young fellow for a husband. Neatness is a vaulable asset in both instances, A party owning a very large farm adjoining our orchard tracts said: "Until you people came in and began your de velopment work and began to clean up things, I asked $100 an acre for my farm, and now I ask $135 an acre, and do not cafe whether I sell at that figure, The work you are doing in creases .the value of mine right a'olng," We call attention to these things because it is of vital im portance to an individual as to the character of neighbor hood in which he locates, not only for social advantages, but as to future value of his holdings, One man at Creswe'l told us only last week that "our coming in there and clean ing up, developing and advertising the land we had there was of so much benefit to him that if he were to give us outright $2500 he would not be giving us more than 8 per cent of what our work had made for him," And he said: "I am only one, others have been benefitted equally as much," We are iot saying these things for bouquets, but it is written "he that bloweth not his own horn, the same shall not be blown," We tell these things frankly because we are looking for purchasers who are looking for just' such a community as we are trying to build up, Are you one who is looking for such a community and willing to do your share towards keeping it the beauty spot of Marion county?
