A PROSPEROUS YEAR. It is now acknowledged that every freight car ' belongimg to the New York Central is in service, and that means good . busi ness. It has been announced that the annual report of the - Lake Shore railroad will show net earnings of 20 per cent. Every steamer that has left the port of New York fcor the past month or six weeks has been laden to its capacity witth out going freight. Exports are being maintainedtively true, also of Boston and Philadelphia. Exports are being maintained at such figures, both in a-mount and money value, that it is reasonable now to predict th at the year 1911 will have established a precedent, a record f"or ex ports from the United States. It appears from all this that the judgment of men -f big business, to take the most generous view of their doleful Epredic tins and not to say that there was a motive behind theim, is of the very poorest sort. Every indication points toward a year of prosperity ff or the United States. There has been an average crop gathered into the bins r; while a little short on some things it is made up on others and lhe pur chasing power of the people is not diminished. There is no possibility of a fall in pricees for farm pi oducts as long as the gold output continues and that class of the popula tion will be as prosperous as in recent years. That will help business of all kinds as the farmers arre the greatest purchasers when they have money. o There are contests on alderman in all but the third wards. In the other wards there, are two to fur narme3 to choose from and every voter should study the lists and (five his judgment. The voter who says he don't like the regular- nom inee, and then refuses to go and vote for the other candicHate, or for some one, is helping the man he doesn't want to see elected. If you are not registered go and register or swear in youar vote on election day. By all means vote. Help amend the p rimary law so as to have a non-partisan primary. When we have shown the people of the state that we have enough intel'igemce to amend the primary 'aw, perhaps we can amend the regis-itration law so as to make it more reasonable. It is now a law to keep people from voting. The editor has sworn several times on a stack of almanacs that he would never again register amd vote under such a law, but when the time comes duty drives a man to act under a bad law. But let us elect good men to tThe city council, and amend the primary law, and then do the nezxt most important thing that comos to hnnd. A FAIR PRICE FOR THE CANAL. The State Canal Board and President Josselyn, of the Port land Railway, Light & Power company, have agreed on a price for the Oregon City locks and canal. The price agreed on is $450,000, and federa1 engineer rs can do no better than to accept it, and close the deal, and ive the people free locks and canal at Oregdli City. There is still some agitation at Oregon City, and certain ele ments there want a million dollars spent building new loocks and canal on the east side. That would make a large sum of money spent at the city at the falls and, and we cannot butadmire their local zeal ff or hav ing money spent there. But it should be remembered that the most zealous advocates of the east side locks and canal were always opposed to free locks and canal at any price. When they could no longer delay action or prevent fr ee locks and canal they came up with a proposition that is out cof reach of the people at this time. The work of the Salem Hoard of Trade tranaportati-on com mittee has borne fruit, and has been endorsed by the commer cial bodies of other valley cities. The Oregon City opposition dies hard, biit it has never had a legitimate basis. o No one need fear harm to any pub'ic institution fr om fair and honest publicity. The Salrm public schools haveb een the subject of some critical discussion for some time but for two years and over a great deal of business and school man.agement has been suppressed. The trouble has not been due to publicity, but for want of it. The time has come for a little fres; h air to blow in on the whole situation, and for taking the general pub lic into the game a little. o CRUEL SPORTS FORBIDDEN. Evaneellst Vlolett says: "I never knew, an infidel who was not a mor al, spiritual and Intellectual coward" His acquaintance wit hlnftdels la ev idently extremely limited. In these days It takes considerable moral and "intellectual bravery," whatever that Is to be a ninfldel. . Police Judge Weller, of San Fran cisco. In fining a wealthy -woman for violating speed ordinances, said: "Now that women are placed on a level with men in this state, chivalry cuts no Ice, and they must be treated in a manly way " Then he fined her $10, which she paid like a little man, and swished her skirts down the cor ridor, smiling brightly at the privi leges her sex had gained. Attorney-General Webb, of Cali fornia, holds that the adoption of equal suffrage In California did not make women eligible as Jurors. It will require an act of the legislature to give the gentle dames this inesti mable privilege for. If it is denied them, they sure will want It. When he got the city all cleaned up, he was sentenced to the county lock-up. If It needs cleaning as badly as the c'ty Jail evidently did, his conviction will be for the public welfare, otherwise, well, U Is extremely doubtful. He may be technically guilty of a viola tion of the laws, but suppose he had 'met" first and the Salvation Army had come along, would It not have been guilty of as great an olterwe In interfering with him? This puts uncrler the ban cock fights, dog fights, bull fights, as already prize fights between two-legged animals have been forbidden. In deed any one who should act as umpire, or assist at any such exhibition, is subject to a fine or imprisonment, or both. This new order of the president went into e(Fect on Labor Day, a holiday on the isthmus, and saved, vho can ever tell, how much of cruelty and suffering! Mr, TTaft is a whole humane society in himself. F. II. R., inm Our Dumb Animals. Tresident Taft deserves an honor mark for intervening in the interest of humanity in the canal zone. Contrast this with President Roosevelt's evident enjoyment of soorts that involve cruelty to beasts. His riding down a coyote and catching it by thejaw and twisting its jaw half off, and letting it run away, was a catchy bit of politica1 advertising for the rougher elements, btit it was inhuman. Continuing our reasons as to "Why We Do It," we do not want to overlook any of the facts-which Mr, Bohrnstedt had in mind at the beginning, ' . While in country bank work some of his closest friends were people of moderate means who wanted to get more than the usual rate of interest paid on bank deposits, but who had not had the business experience necessary to wisely place their funds where these funds would bring to them the largest returns possible with entire safety, therefore placed the funds at the disposal of Mr, Bohrnstedt, He invested the funds principally in real estate mortgages, but after having bank work and spending three years in traveilng thruout the coun try, he came to the conclusion that these friends could be best served by allowing them to get in' with him on these , farming and fruit raising operations, There is well selected real estate back of every dollar invested and the real estate is growing in value every day, not simply on account of the improvements going on, on adjoining land, but on account of the improvements made by the Bohrnstedt Company, Many people invest in unimproved land for the sake of the rise in . value, but in our lands our customers get not only the rise in value, but the returns from the land as well, Many a man who knows the value of well-selectel real estate does not have the opportunity to know of the best lo cations in real estate, Many others may not have sufficient money to buy and im prove a place of their own, or are in other occupations so that they do not care to, but would really like to have the profit there is in it, Combining the money of these different ' classes of people makes a fund large enough to handle the land on a large scale and at larger profit to the investors than they could possibly secure by each investing his own, It will therefore be seen that our company provides an op portunity for all investors to get in on an equal basis, Are you one?
