The prospects of new business, fol lowing the opening of the Panama canal, Is responsible for the expan sion. Among the big contracts are four steamers for the American Hawaiian line, two for the Standard Oil company, three steam whalers for the Pacific Coast Steamship company, two passenger steamers for the Clyde line, two for the Atlantic & Pacific line, four for the Panama-American Mail Steamship line, and two for the Alaska Steamship company. The American merchant marine now has a tonnage of 7,508,082, which is almost a million tons great er than the fleets of Germany, France and Norway combined.
