The city of Des aioines, Iowa, has about three hundred sa loons, according to our best information. The commission system may have reduced the number of sa loons in Des Moines, Iowa, but that ia all. The weak points of the charter are the nominating system and the high salaries, to be paid. rJut those matters can be remedied in the future, and no one favoring the commission form of government should reject the charter on that account. MORE CLUSTER LIGHTS. The movement for cluster lights on the streets should not be permitted to stop now. There are breaks in the streets we have, and there are fine business blocks that should have the clusters. The cluster lights should be extended north and south on Commercial street. The finest streets in Oregon are State, Court, Liberty and Commercial. They should have cluster lights by all means. o GOVERNOR WEST GOING AHEAD. The policy of beautJfying the grounds of the state institu tions, and building decent road3 to them belongs to Governor West. What is being done at the state insane asylum will be done and is being done at all the state institutes about Salem. The next things is to have conditions such that the people of the state when they come to Salem will be able to see these in stitutions. Governor West will not wait for the county authorities to act in the matter of building a boulevard to connect all the institu tions. He has two sources of supply for procuring crushed rock, and he has the labor to crush the rock and put it on the roads. He has now secured the use of twenty teams of mules for their keeping, and will be able to put the rock on the roads. He will now try to procure a crusher and an engine to operate it, and will go ahead and build roads to connect the state prop erties. He will not wait for legislation or county co-operation, but will try to find ways and means to meet the urgent need for roads to reach the state properties. 4 It must be very satisfactory to friends of good roads that there is a man in the ofllce of governor who will not wait for the legislature, the counties or even the slow-going taxpayer, but who will go ahead and try to get results. The roads to these institutions have been a disgrace long enough. o FREE ADVERTISING SOLICITED. The Woodrow Wilson management sends us daily requests for free advertising. When Glfford Plnchot, just returned from Alaska, was Introduced by President Max well at the Seattle Cotimercial Club rooms last night, he wag given an ovation never equaled before in the club's history. Every available inch of standing room was occupied, and the crowd even surged into the nar row space behind the speaker's table. Both Plnchot and Polndexter spoke of their trip In Alaska, refuting the published reports that they had been cooly received there. When Plnchot commended the ac tion of the Chicago convention of progressives In endorsing Senator La Follette for president, the audience cheered wildly. Both Plnchot and Polndexter attributed much of the grumbling concerning Alaska to "armchair musbers," of New York "to whom the essential thing was not loyalty to Alaska, but to get what they could out of it." o The "pure food law" is designed by the government to protect the public from Injurious Ingredients in both foods and drugs. It Is beneficial both to the public and to the conscientious manufacturer. Ely's Cream Balm, a successful remedy for cold in the head, nasal catarrh, hay fever, etc, containing no injurious drugs, meets fully the requirements of the new law, and that fact is prominently stated on every package. It contains none of the injurious drugs which are required by the law to be men tioned on the label. Hence you can use it safely. e Tuke Your Common Colds Seriously.
