As a result of th testimony of John Pfeffers, law partner of Albert J. Hopkins, defeat ed opponent of William Lorlmer as candidate for the United States sen ate, that five members of the legisla ture had suddenly switched to Lorl mer when Lorlmer's agent became active, State Senators Downing and McCormlck nnd Stnte Representa tives Murgctt, Lawrenc and Flelds taack were called to the witness stand today in the Investigation of the charges that Lorimer purchased his seat in the senat. Senator Kern arrived today and the sub-committee of the senate elec tions' committee,, before which the hearing is being conducted is now complete- , Senator McCormlck testified that he supported Hopkins on 107 ballots and switched to Lorlmer in order to j break the deadlock. Ho said he nev ; er received any money, as none was offered him and that throughout his j entire legislative, career had never i heard of graft, corruption or dend j locks. Questioned by Senator Kern, he I said he believed that every member I of the legislature which elected Lor imer was "honest and as good as gold." He said he did not place any credence in the confession of State Representative White, and thought that the other rprcsentatlves con fessed In fright. Henry Terrill, a former member of the legislature, said that John Grif fin, another assembly man, told him there was a "thousand In it" if he voted for Lorlmer. He said he re fused the money and voted against Ixrlmer.
