LEOPARDS ATTACKED THE TRAINER GRIM BATTLE FOR MASTERY; WAGED ON JOY STREAK HE-i TWEEJf NERVY LITTLE WO. MAN AND STORSI.FRIGHTENED LEOPARDS. Why thoy didn't tear her to shreds will always romaln a mystery. Nu bian Hons would rarely rave more fiercely than did those leopurdB nt tho fnlr grounds laist night. The anger of the desert blazed In their yes. They snarled upon her every move, and at lewtt twice ihey crouched in open rebellion. It was only a near-tragedy. But It was so perilously near that those who witnessed It became tense, norved and very still Tho crowd wan rather large, considering the unfavorable condition, for those there had sought the nulmal tent on tho "Joy Streak" primarily to get out of the ruin. Over their heads the tent flopped, and tho wet sldewall hitting the poles gave out a most uncanny noise, Occasionally a drop of water would trlko you full In the face, and the (round wns muddy. Princess Victoria hnd gone rrln pess Florlne had taken her place. We rend a few days ago about this change In the trainers at the big an. Imal show, and of the flrHt serious results. Every paper In Washing ton had received some message from the Vancouver tragedy. Last night came near being tho second, Tho Parker shows were all ready for business they hnd been delayed, but this only urged them on In their preparations for last night. Then It rained. Princess Florlne she ays thnt Is not her renl name; she bad cast off for professional purposes the name of ono of Kentucky's proud est families Prlncese Florlne bncked Into the arena last night, and start ed to put these snarling cats through their paces. Princess Florlne uaed a whip and bent those boasts Into a form of sub mission. They were ready for work. Then tho stnnd slipped from under them, and they foil to the wet arena, This seemed to doubly enrage them. The two males struck at Fiorina sev eral times, and refused to tnko to the perliiHtal ngaln, Despite this she whipped one of tho boast.; until he cowered ro tho floor, and then, to show she feared uot, Iny full length on his body. And It wasn't the usal "forshow" rebellion; It, wasn't a scheduled act not on your life. -It was so near a tampering with death thnt not all who saw It finite understood. All of them, however, g.tspod, and all of them left the, tent later, uesplte the rain, with a vague sort of sickening admiration. They saw this woman fight her battle alone. She was very much alone.for none could have helped her had the bensta broken bounds. They didn't boo her nfterwards. Then she almost wept not quite. "Oh. Its all right now,'' she said, "but that wns a hard crowd to please Whv, they dlda't even give me a smile they didn't give mo a hand; Its tierce." "Somtlmes the crowd applauds," she went on. "and this kinder mnkes you feel betior mnkes you feel they appreciate youract. When the weath er Is fine and there ban been a big dny. and the nnlmnla feel good and clean, then It Is nllrlght. Tint a fnlr grounds on a wet. rainy night Is the most dismal plane on earth. The whole blamed mldwnv goes dippy, rietween the tears and the rain, ev erything gi tH soaked the tents, bed ding, the handkerchiefs, tho food everything." Ilnrriinnn were alive to day our dllUculties with the lines of which he was the head, would be set tled In a twinkling." This wns the parting statement to dny of J. V. Kline. Internatlonnl president of the blacksmiths' union, before leaving Ixis Angeles on the 10:30 train for Omaha, where a meet ing of the system federation crafts is scheduled for next Saturday for the purpose of going over the strike sit uation on the Hnrrlmnn lines. "As a matter of fact," Kline con tinued, "the Idea of a system federa tion met with the entire approval of the late railroad wizard. He told me In New York shortly before his death that he was in favor of meeting a committee of employes from his sev eral lines when dilllcultles arose, and that as long as he lived there never would be another strike on his roads." White admitting that there was a remote possibility of settling the present trouble without a strike, Kline snld the prospects were very gloomy. Simultaneously with the Omaha meeting another meeting Is to be held In Houston. Tex.." he said. "Then we probably will announce definite action from Chicago the first of next week." o Sandy Incorporates.
