Such a park will become an amusement center for a large number of people, and will be very desirable as an addition to the city. These parks, in time, are beautified with an open-air pavilion, with fountains and statutary and for open-air band concerts and picnics. 1 lio German Society has secured i-n option on a three and a half-acre grove south of the city.as beautiful as Fairmount Park. The society will try to secure this park by the co-operation of its members, and at the same time build up a social center. In this laudable undertaking they deserve the assistance of all public-spirited citizens, as the park will be public. The plans of the committee, if carried out, will not only make money for all the share holders, but will secure a park. The German Society has about 150 members, and the indica tions are that the movement will meet with general approval. 50 PER CENT FAIL TO PASS III GRADE EIGHT X-RAYS AND' SMILES. If all the vehicles in Salem are made to keep off the streets when not moving, the town will look like the insiirrectos had been through it, and left nothing alive. Eleven more appeals were filed In the circuit court here yesterday from manager, Zig Schye, whoever he may be. Gaines Is Mad. Gaines is not only willing to fight, but he is mad and if Courtney is just one-half as mad, he can get a fight, and one on any terms almost he wants, save preliminary stunts, and It ought to be one which would draw a crowd. Now the reason that Gaines Is mad ia that Courtney and his manager have been Intimat ing that he is afraid of Courtney, and does not want to fight him when, as a matter of fact, he has offered to fight him, but ao far the offers have been brushed aside. Was Too Ilusy. "I offered to fight Courtney in Vancouver just a short while ago," continued Gaines. "I met him on the street and tried to get him to sign up for a fight, but he said he had his dates all full, and that he was going to be discharged, and then he was going to the logging camps. I then offered to sign up and fight him at any time ,he desired this fall or next year any time, but he Just walked away from me, and would not even listen to the proposals. No licplles to Letters. "Then he and his manager began to roast me In the Portland papers, and the papers here, for not wanting to fight him, and also sent me let ters. Well, I replied to them Ella C. Members of the pork and beans brigade, howev er, need not apply, because I will not enter a preliminary contest, but it must be a main event for money." Under an ordinance passed some time ago by the council it Is unlaw ful to ride bicycles on the walks on certain streets of the city. The chief, hoping no doubt that it would be ob served, had large glaring placards posted on these streets admonishing the public in general that wheels must not be ridden on the walks. Bicycle riders In general, however, have dis regarded the warning and on most of the streets, and especially Chem eketa, the walks are crowded at the noon hour and in the evening with wheels. While a wheel man Is not allowed on the walks of this street, the pedestrian's rights are wholly Ig nored and in many instances, where they have insisted upon keeping the walk and it matters not whether men or women they have been abused by the wheelman, and in some instances collisions have occurred but no serious Injuries have resulted. o THE RECALL PETITIONS GROW SLOWLY Made Happy There were several hun dred people who en joyed their trip to Kingwood Park yesterday and delighted to see the great amount of improvements now going On- Graded streets, cement walks and curbs, shade trees, beau tiful entrance gates, electric light lines, pure well water to be piped all over the tract and the great number of new bungalow's now being built. The names are coming in very slowly for the attempted recall and It begins to look as though the un dertaking would fall for want of sig natures. None have been circulated In the south part of the city, where the sentiment seems to be almost unanimous for the policies of the present school board.
