We S5c FULL LEASED WIRE TEtXGRAPH REPORT TRADES CO-OPERATIVE PROFITS IN REAL ESTATE. The German Society of Salem set a new standard by showing, what can be done by co-operation in an investment. They bought a piece of property for $8000 and inside of two year3 sold it and made ninety per cent on their money. Besides this the members who put in $100 to $500 got six per cent on their money until the property was sold. The Knights of Pythias lodge, the Odd Fellows lodge and now the Masonic order are all examples of co-operative investment. An organization where all are interested in upholding an in vestment cannot but gain the greatest profits. It enables the man with $100 to $500 to get the benefit of the larger and more profitable deals in real estate. It i3 a well-known fact that the small holdings of real estate increase in value so slowly that small holders make little. But co-operative profits mount up rapidly, and 11 get the ben efit of a share in the larger enterprise. o SALEM A MANUFACTURING TOWN. The New Years Capital Journal contained complete statistics of Salem factories and payrolls. The list was so complete that the Salem Statesman recently copied the article and gave credit. A clipping bureau sends us extracts from 31 state papers that have copied the showing in a paragraph as follows : "Salem has become a manufacturing town. It has 45 factor ies employing 1510 men. The monthly payroll is $90,390 and value of the annual products is more than $4,000,000." Manufacturing conditions at Salem are very favorable, and there is abundance of water power going to waste. There are thousands of families where some of the members are prepared to work in any kind of industries. There is room in Salem for several more industries, and they can be made successful by local encouragement. o JAPAN'S POLICY OF EXPANSION IN THE ORIENT. No one should overlook the fact that Japan is determined upon a constant policy of expansion in the Orient. China is awakening to this fact, and whatever Japan may ac complish in the next fifty years, China must finally be con quered. The writer predicts that in the long run China will arouse and resist and conquer Japan in the greatest Oriental war of centuries. For the present we must observe the slow mobilization of China, and the constant encroachment of Japan upon the coun try north. Japan has been working steadily toward the end of announcing her intention to annex South Manchuria for months. She has strengthened her forces steadily, perfected her system of quasi-governmem at every fiin;sy excuse, foredd quarrels on the native officials, and even gone to the extent cf lemanding the withdrawal of Chine.se police from ther own districts. It is a case of unheard of cheek, quite in keeping with her ac tion in Korea at the time of the first Chinese war. Now she is almost ready for the final step, and it would not surprise observers if the announcement were made any day. The Chinese minister to Japan, H. E. Wang Ta-hsih, has in formed the Peking authorities that the Japanese government contemplates increasing the garrison force in Manchuria to a still greater extent. It is also generally admitted that the recent summons home of the Japanese governor-general of Kwantung was for the pur pose of consultations, to the end of an announcement of annex ation. It is amusing in this connection to read in the newspapers that at this consultation the ultimate annexation of Manchuria was decided upon. The ultimate annexation of Manchuria anfl China and India and the Philippines was decided upon 400 years ago, and has never been lost sight of since, rot even when Japan discovered that her bows and arrows were not a match for battleships and field guns. She simply held the matter inabeyance until she learned the new game. i THE MAY STRAND MAGAZINE rend with astonishment the marvel- The May Strand Is an attractive 0U8 m,mbpr of times a Pack my be . , ., . arranged without repetition, A ool- numbor both as rogards f lot on and, , . ,, . . Walton sustained painful but ' not serious injuries last evening when a street car crashed Into a wa gon which he was driving, at the in tersection of Market and Liberty street. He sustained bruises on the arm and head and also a dislocated thumb and it was feared also Inter nal Injuries but the physicians after examining him at the Salem Hospital pronounced the hurts not serious and say that it will only be a matter of a few days until he is fully recov ered. Walton was driving down Market street when the accident occurred. He had two wagons, the one hooked to the other, and both loaded -with wood. As he was crossing the track he evidently did not see the car and it crashed Into the rear wagon be fore the motorman could stop. The force of the collision was so great that Walton was thrown some 15 feet from the wagon Into the street. r X-RAYS AND SMILES. C. C. Goodwin, the famous Salt Lake editor, takes Roosevelt to task for Indorsing the Mormon pegpVe and therefore polygamy. He forgets the strenuous one is nutty on the matter of big families, and is acting consist ently In standing by the Mormons. Mr. Kehrberger is having the big roller doing the ironing stunt on the bosom of South Commercial street. A dispatch says the girl co-eds at the Chicago university are practical ly all against marriage. This is en couraging to the young men who are hustling for a little home. It cuts down the chances of drawing a lemon in the matrimonial lottery. The Oreognian's cartoon this morning la Intended to show that the general opinion that the federal courts are controlled by the big busi ness Interests, is erroneous. If that paper can use the same cartoon when the higher courts' have got through with the Oregon land steal, It will have gone far towards proving its faith In the courts well founded. Peter West, a Pendleton lawyer, Is reported to be dying. The same re port says he has been married 12 times. Maybe he. was afraid the 13th might be unlucky and dodged. Household Remedy Taken In h Spring fop Yar. Ralph Rust, Willis, Mich, writes: "Hood's Sartaparllla has been a house hold remedy In our home as long as I enn remember. I have taken It in the spring tor several years. It has no equal for cleansing the blood and ex pelling the humors that accumulate during the winter. Being a farmer and exposed to bad weather, my sys tem is often affected, and I often take Hood's Sarsaparilla with good results." Hood's Sarsaparilla is Peculiar to Itself. There Is no "just as good." Get it today in usual liquid form or tablets called Sarsatabs. PLANNING TO PROTECT THE TIMBER THE MAY WIDE WORLD MAGA. ZIXE. Occasional visitors from Dallas to the Capital City are astonished at the rapid development of the town of West Salem. For several years its growth was steady but slow. Since the Salem, Falls City & Western Rail way has been granted permission to cross the Willamette and enter the city new life has been injected into the community, and progress Is noticeable In every direction. It Is reported that a local car service will be operated between West Salem and the center of business on the other side, as soon as the road shall have been extended over the river. With a prospect of quick commun ication West Salem Is becoming pop ular as a residence district and many nice homes are being built there. Several public buildings are under construction and street Improve ments are being made. A number of miles of cement walks have been laid and the parking along the streets Is being ornamented with quantities of appropriate shade trees. Lee Westbrook, clerk at the Hotel Marion and his lady assistant at the cigar case are having quite a bit of amusement today at the expense of well meaning but innocent travelers. A caller at the hotel this morning stepped up to the counter and no ticed what appeared to be an over turned bottle of black Ink without a cork. A blotch of black ink on the counter directly under the over turned bottle attracted the attention of the caller. He replaced the bot tle In its proper position and called Westbrook's attention to the blotch of Ink on the counter. Trying to suppress a smile, Westbrook picked up the blotch of Ink with his fingers as though It were a thin piece of Ice. It turned out to be a thin piece of black metal cut zig-zag to represent a blotch of black ink and thus the joke was exposed. o Bend proposes a flower show, to be held this summer under the auspices of the Ladies' Library club.
