PAGE FOUR DAILY CAPITA! JOCTIXAL, SALEM, OREGON, TUESDAY, APRIL 11, 1011. TO SELECT POSTS FOR THE LIGHTS COMMITTEE OF BOARD OF TRADE COSSIDEKS DESIGNS AD WILL FILE REPORT OX THEIR SELEC TIOX IS A SHOHT TIME. The clauter light committee of the board of trade had another meeting yesterday afternoon and upon Its conclusion It was announced that the committee would within a week be In shape to recommend to the board the designs of posts to be used. The committee has catalogs show log designs of different posts from manufacturers from all over the United States and they were consid ered at the meeting yesterday after noon. While no definite agreement was reached It Is believed that be fore the week Is at an end that one will be arrived at and a design for the posts decided upon. As soon as a decision Is reached an ordinance on the subject will be prepared and enacted Into law by the council. DOORS MUST STAY TJXLOCKED (Continued from Page 1.) company has not done this or that, and why they can not do It. "I ob ject to him talking to this council without securing unanimous con sent," Interposed the mayor and that being lacking, Mr. Page went away back and sat down, and sat down hard. Councilman Huckestein want ed to hear him talk, but the mayor objected and forced a vote on the or dinance and It unanimously carried. After the ordinance had passed Mr. Page again wanted to address the council and Councilman Manning and Hurkstein both wanted to listen to what he had to say. Councilman Lafky, who occupied the chair, started to put a motion allowing him the floor, but the mayor reminded him that it required unanimous con sent and that his objection was suf ficient. The council then proceeded with the business of the evening and Mr. Page not seeing any further op portunity to break In on the pro cedlngs with a speech, put on his rubbers and slipped out the council chamber without even noticing, so to speak, which end of the car he was getting off in his hurry to seek the sweet sympathy of friends. What He wnnted To Suj. Now it appears that what Mr. Page really wanted to say was that he had Just come from a conference with his superiors In Portland and that at his Instance and request the order locking the rear doors of cars had been rescinded but he never got a chance to frame it Into a public ut terance until he found a newspaper man who appreciating the passes which the road bands out so gener ously to the fraternity In general, took an Interview from him. It was too bad that Mr. Page did not get the opportunity to beat the mayor to it, but it wasn't his fault, only his mis fortune. Everyone In Salem knows that Superintendent Page has only the good of the city at heart, and a laudable ambition to give the city the best service possible. Everyone also knows that the service is much Improved lately. New track has been laid in places, the service is to be extended to Salem Heights, and anyone who notices the service at all will note that cars are met much more frequently than heretofore. "It Is up to the water company," said Durbin. "Talked with their at torney some time ago and the com pany Is going to reply." Still unsatisfied, (he is "a persist ent cuss"). Councilman Waring again asked a question and it was then that Councilman Durbin who hates corporations loathes and despises the very ground that they walk on or crawl on or whatever corpora tions do on the ground, and who be lieves that the gravest charge' that can be preferred against a man is that he is close to a corporation, re minded Waring that he was nearer to the company than any one on the committee and that he should know what It was doing. The shot came like a cannon ball and as it passed across the room to hit Councilman Waring It tore Its way through the air, scattering frag ments In every direction and It was no wonder that Warng sat down and that he did not have another word to say during the whole meeting. All he could do was take the count and then some, while Durbin did the counting. But he Is in his usual good health this morning. $1000 Cash. Phone Main 82 TO SEE THAT NO FIRE TRAPS ARE ALLOWED With the view of rflleving the city of the many fire trap buildings ex isting in the city a conference was held this forenoon between Alder man Huckestein, chairman of the committee on health and police, Al derman Low, chairman of the com mittee on fire, light and water and Chief of Police Hamilton, and it was decided that the three during the week should visit all the buildings which are considered as Are traps and submit a report on the subject at the next meeting of the council. According to Information which crept out at the conference, there are many buildings la the city which are veritable fire traps. Some of them are situated right in the heart of the business section and are used as lodging houses and should a fire break out in them, death would be almost certain to some of the lodg ers for the lack of ony exit. The committee will make a thorough in vestigation of them, ascertain from t'.ie city attorney what legal, remedy the council has, and make a full re port on the subject to the council and recommend what action It con siders necessary to be taken. , o X-RAYS AND SMILES.
