TOOMBS From the Great Play by PAUL ARMSTRONG Copyright, 1910, by American Preti 1 Allocution CHAPTER III. WARDEN HANDLER, regret ting that be bad given bis visitors an Indication that he believed be had recognized Rose Lane's deliverer, answered the questions of the girl and the lieuten ant governor by stating: "The man Is as bad as tbe burglar be threw out of the car window even worse. He's in this prison at this moment, I firmly believe, according to tbe description we've Just heard." "Oh. Impossible!" -exclaimed Miss I.nne. her face coloring. "He was a gentleman, a thorough gentleman, and too young to be a hardened criminal." Her face became shadowed with con cern. I Tbe warden was vastly amused at this remark, which the young girl ren dered with tbe finality of unquestioned authority. "Too young!" he laughed. "A ft doesn't cut any figure in crime the way you mean. It's some of these young fellows that will tuke a chance at anything, you Hte. they're ambi tious. They're auxloiis to rise In their business." The warden paused and glnnoed from the girl to the observing lieutenant governor, then to the two members of the Gate of Hope He lotiinii'iiKtl on the fuel that his vlslluis bud tils Agreed vitli liltn'on varlnns points ami Informed tlicm that lie liatl determined to offer them a few object lessons, lessons v lth living models. "I'll show you." lie said, "that these croo'.ts we've got here will ply their trade at all times, whether tliey profit or not; that, in short, criminality Is a mania with them n ml that there's no use In try ing to better them." His first exhibit, brought In by the secretary, was the celebrated forger "Wlnkey" Davis. At the warden's request Lieutenant Gov ernor Vny drew a check for $r and banded It to nilnkey. To oblige the warden Wlnkey. aided by a knife and pen unci ink. In live minutes had "raised'' it to the amount of $"0.000. l'he lieutenant governor pronounced it perfect. "1 know where I could pass It. too," laughed Illlnkey as he was led away. "I. had til in on the hooks once, and he couldn't resist raising the prison checks," chuckled Handler. "I could bring 111 fellows like that nil day." He picked up an object from tils desk "Do you see this loekV A tiermnn Inventor waiting outside has spent fourteen years lu perfecting that. He claims It cannot be opened without the key. The prison board has accept ed It for use here If the claims made for It are true. We have it man here paralyzed on one side, a sneuk thief. 1 have sent for him, He may not open it, but he will try, for he cannot re sist the criminal tiuinlu that controls him. Smith," to his secretary, "gel the Dutchman; also the gentleman known as 'Dick the Rnt.' " When the decrepit form of "Dick the Hut" was brought in, together with the patient Inventor Bltckendolfen bach. he was given the lock, three minutes and a balrpln. Ten seconds before his allotted time expired be threw the lock, opened, on tba ward en's desk, and with bis repulsive, seamy fuce contorted Into what he considered was a smile be Inclined his head to one side. From bis throat came Inarticulate squeals of glee ex actly tbe squeals of a rut. Only tbe watchfulness of Smith saved the "fiat" from the violent, despulrlug onslaught of the Gerumu, who screamed: "I'll kill blm! Up ruin me! Und in It a hairpin, nielii Gott!" you're not the Brst man to be ruin ed by a hairpin." laughed the warden "Iloii't tell your wife." Smith sent the inventor to th'e rail tvud station In charge of a guard and consigned the grinning Hllnkey to tbe cell that bud long been bis borne. Ou returning to the olllce the secretary snld: "I've brought Valentine along too. I thought you might want 111 in to oien the safe," A disturbed expression came Jnto the prison master's face. He glanced iulckly at Kay and bis nleee. then talked lu an undertone with his aid He was Interrupted by Mrs. Webster. "The two you have shown us do not ntlrely prove your argument. Mr. Warden," she sale I doubtlngly. "They are the very lowest types In the pris on, you argue a general premise from two Individual cases. We do not maintain that such apparent criminals as we have seen should bo liberated, but" she turned to Fay "there are gentlemen here, governor, men of quite a different type than these, whom ono never sees." "Warden," said the lieutenant gov ernor, "I fear the ladles have more Interest In the more romantic types of criminals poets, for Instance." Mrs, Moore rose indignantly. "1 shall make note of that frivolous speech In my report," she snapped. Handler thought of Valentine, who was being detained outside. He would r f J v ,i i v.- BUNKET DAT 18 RAISED TBB CHECK TO 50.000. give bis visitors their wish, as Fay seemed greatly Interested. He would 8 how them bis prize exhibit. In spite of a belief that was taking a strong hold on bis brain he would take a tbnnce on displaying tbe unique abili ties of No. 1280. He well knew what to do should complications ensue. There were dark cells In Slug Sing for convicts tbe warden could decide to be unruly. These were damp, dark cells below the level of the rushing river, relics of years when tbe state bad little money and little thought for those held to bare broken its laws. There were cells with "straltjnckets," where a man could be trussed up with straps Hied to tbe walls, like a suckling pig in a market window, only bis toes touching the floor. Anyway No. 1,'JSD was already discredited. "Get Valentine!" he gruffly said to Smith. "Well, governor," he contin ued In a more amiable tone, "I'll give you and the ladles n romantic type. He's not a poet, but be Is doing ten years here for opening a bank safe without tools or the combination, sim ply by sense of touch. There is some poetry In tlint." "Impossible!" commented Fay. "Well, the batik safe was opened and the money stolen, nnd bis pal penciled." The door at the right of the ofllce leading In fmm the corridors of cells opened. In ciillie Smith, followed by a young mail whose convict's garb could not overshadow the Intelligence that Mhowed In bis ashen face. Clear ly the prison air was working Its baneful peuult.v ou blm with more sue cess than usual In the case of men who entered the Institution In good health. Vaguely conscious ilmt there were visitors present. No ll!N!i stood beforp the vviirden villi bis eyes dl reeled toward the floor Ills slioul ders were square, be was of good height, with n llgure which yet bore indications Hint he bad been athletic In his free tl.iys. When be had en tcred the room the lieutenant g:iv ernor had noticed' that the convict walked with n free, manly stride, hav ing no semblance to the shuttling pris on slouch of his felluvr inmates. "Penult me," Handler addressed his visitors, with an elabornte gesture, "UIOK THK BAT.'' "to present .Mr. Jimmy Valentine. He's put more time locks on tbe re tired list tbmi any three men in the whole place, aud wheu it comes to tbe fancy 'getaway' only a crosseyed copper cun kcei tubs ou him." The. wardeu's picturesque lutroduc Hon was lost on Hose Lane. She caught a glimpse of the face of the man In felou's stripes. She leaned to one side to make certain. Yes; now she could not possibly be mistaken. She extended ber band spasmodically aud clutched the lieutenant governor's arm, "Uncle, uncle." she said chokingly. "It Is he!" "What's the matter, child?" was Fay's anxious response. "That is the man who saved me!" the excited young girl gasped. "That Is the man who threw tbe burglar through the express tralu window!" The warden's shifting eye caught the agitated inurement of liose Laue as Jimmy Valentine was brought in and lie quickly resolved on a course of procedure that would place the young prisoner in as had a lllit as possible. As for tbe lieutenant governor, he was almost as astonished as Hose at the unexpected deiiouenicut. and ho quiet ly Insisted that she say nothing more about the subject and calm herself. So far as outward manifestations were concerned, the girl followed this advice fairly well, but ber heart pounded uucontrolledly, ber pulse throbbed correspondingly, and a wave of deepest pity surged over her as she realized the horrible lot to which bad been condemned the bero of the one great adventure of ber life, the gal Innt Prlnc e fJllQlm gf -the onl.- rcV romanceln w"WcVslie"Tiad ever"played a part. The lieutenant governor addressed the prisoner: "How do yon do. sir?" Valentine swung around and faced the speaker. He realized that be could no longer conceal bis features from the spectator. He pressed bis hands nervously together and looked his questioner squarely In the eyes. "How do you do. sir?" be said In low voice Handler was watching tbe exchange of greetings with keeu Interest. ".Met before, governor, have you?' be naked Inirenuonsly. "No." responded Fay. "But I'm glad to see you ha vp some types here dit ferent than 'Dick the Rat' and" "Yes." broke In the warden. "Here. Jimmy, there's something gone wrong with the otlice snfe. Open It for me will you?" Fay fasteued a pentrHtlDg gaze on Valentine The prisoner turned bis face away and toward the warden. "I'll do so very gladly If I can What Is the combination?" "Combination!" exploded the ward en. star! nc hi the prisoner. Valentine was as cool and ns insist ent as though he wore nn employer talking with one of nisi clerks. "Yes. tbe combination. How caD you expect me to open the safe with out It? Why. Mr. Warden, you must be joking with me." Rose Laue smiled complacently into the lieutenant governor's face. Handler's face became red a deep red that threatened uny moment to merge Into n rich grape purple hue "You go at that safe and open li just like ' yon need the coin!" be shouted. Valentine made a deprecatory ges hire. "You Hatter me." be answered, and be smiled a most aggravating smile that caused tbe now thoroughly urous ed prison master to pound bis desk and hoarsely cry: "Flattery be d d! You do as I say or I'll give you the" Handler caught himself Just In time He suddenly remembered that I lie lieutenant governor was present "Say. His gaze passed from the lieutenant governor to the two members of tile Gate of Hope so ciety. Then lu tbe background, half crouched Into one of the uncomforta ble wooden, chairs that adorned the warden's oillee. be saw a girlish fig ure. Now the grape purple began to show- In the warden's face. The thick veins In his neck begun to thicken still more and to crowd his low collur for space. "You better do as I ask, Valentine," be warned. "I know that every one here knows that, buf- ' "You're doing ten for opening a bank safe and you can't open an old safe like mine?" The warden was sneer ing. "I never opened that bank safe. You know that." "You're going to pose, eh? Well, listen, you go and 'cop that gopher" or I II give you solitaire for a month." Handler was now at his wornt. A mouth of "solitaire!" A month, thir ty days, thirty nights, nloiie. save for the rats nnd the river tides that seep ed between the stones! "Get out of here, you'- Mrs. Webster stepped forward pro testlngly. Fay determined to take a band. . "You're losing your temper, ward en," he began when he saw tbe pris oner step to the door through which he had come. "Just a moment," Fay said commandlngly to the convict. "I forgot your name."
