Not one of the six apparently left any trail, and, for this reason, It was be lieved that the fugitives remained together, and possibly Intend to make a fight If apprehended. The men dropped 12 feet from the window to a driveway and then scaled a 20-foot wall before gaining the open. o Jacob IJils April llth Tickeu at Commercial book store. 4-3-tf Junior Guild Of the Episcopal church will meet tomorrowat 2:30 p. m. at the resi dence of Mrs. Geo. M. Post, S. Winter street, near Oak. That the servant girl problem is being rapidly and satisfactorily solved by half a hundred of the male population of Salem is manifested In a little paperrcovered book in. County Clerk Allen's office In the court house. In addition to other information contained in this book, there Is a rec ord kept of the occupation of those seeking marriage licenses. Between January 1 and March 31 of this year Mr. Allen issued about ,73 of these certificates, which give mere man permission to take unto himself a helpmate. Of the 73 li censes Issued, 54 girls gave their oc cupation (or hubby gave it for them) as "housekeepers" one waitress, one stenographer, a clerk, a nurse, a stu dent and a scattering of various oth er occupations in which women are Interested, completed the list, Fifty-four, or over two-thirds of the girls were housekeepers before marriage, according to the records It Is no wonder that servant girls are a scarce article, when more than 50 have married within three months in this city. Incidentally this little record re calls the fact that during the last few months 54 men, after "the rush 'and the stress of the day," have cleaned and combed and primed and then, each, walking briskly with head erect, has made his way to the kitch en of another man's home, within the walls of which his bride-to-be as busily engaged over the range, in the pantry or over the dining table, and after waiting patiently for what seemed hours to him on the steps leading to the back porch, he and the little girl have wandered along Wll son avenue they have attended the comic operas at the opera house tliey have had their share of red lemonade at the cricus grounds, and, when weather oonditions prevented "spoon ing by the light of the moon," 54 hired girls and 54 beaua have sat on porches and listened to the patter patter of the raindrops, or they have drawn up two common kitchen chairs very close together and dreameil that they were resting on the finest of "B & H.' Russian leather-covered "set. tees" and bye and bye dreams come true. Not the leather-covered dreams but the dream of the day when "Cupid'1 Allen was to get the price of another "passport to Heaven;" the day on which the furniture man was to get an order for a "cute little white iron bed" and other household neces sities, and the day on which he and she were to line up bfore that white. haired old gentleman who has al ready joined In wedlock over 500 couples, and hear the words, "and those whom God hath joined togeth er," etc. The question arises "Why do two. thirds of the license procurers favor the housekeeper for a wife?" Is it because the men are looking forward to good meals when they bid fare well to the restaurants or Is it be cause these girls care more for the home life" and less for society? Perhaps some of the 54 benedicts will venture a reply. Judging from these record, how ever, It will pay those who have ser vant girls In their homes to be very good to the girls as there seems to be 50 chances that the servant girl soon will be won over by Cupid, to every one chance that the little bear er of the darts will get the man's stenographer and it Is harder to se cure a housekeeper than it is .to find a stenographer. BERKELEY'S MAYOR WILL BE TRACTABLE Berkeley, Cal., April 3. Declaring that he will foJlow the example set by Emit Seidel, Socialist mayor of Milwaukee, Mayor-elect J. Stitt Wil son, of Berkeley, today talked of his election over Beverley Hodghead, Re publican, by a majority of 281 votes. "You need not expefct anything dra matic or spectacular la my work as Berkeley's mayor,'' said Wilson to day. "We are now face to face here with practically the same problems whclh confronted Seidel whem he was elected mayor of Milwaukee, and I expect to go about solving them in the same dignified and conservative manner that he employed. "Politics will not enter Into my ap pointments, as only merit and ability count In public service. I expect to initiate a municipal policy for Berke ley looking to the ultimate ownership of all public utilities, and I do not ex pect to usher In Socialism." U. G.
