In an endeavor to force the mine owners to observe the "closed shop," 2,500 min ers, employed by the Northwestern Improvement company, at Cle Elum, Roslyn, Jonesvllle, Ronald and Num ber 5, went on strike this morning. 1 The miners' union signed a con tract last September, submitting to an "open shop" agreement. A month ago 130 men were discharged at Cle Elum, and the miners' union claims that many non-unon men have been employed to take the places of those discharged who were, members of that organization. Saturday night the union held meetings at the various towns and after consideration voted to demand a closed shop, notifying Superintend ent Claghorn of the Northwestern Im provement company of their action by telephone Sunday. Claghorn, In an endeavor to miti gate the effect of the strike order, Immediately ordered all mines closed by the company. Sheriff German has sworn In 30 deputies, the Cle Elum police force has been increased to 30, and In oth er camps Bcores of special officers are guarding property. Thus far there has been no demon strations, but that trouble is antici pated la evidenced by the activity of police officers In adding to their forces. ANTI-TRUST LEAGUE IS AFTER HIM AFTER. FITZGERALD WHO IT SAYS "IS THE REPRESENT A TIA'E IN CONGRESS OF THE TREDATORY INTERESTS OF WALL STREET." Washington, April 3. Bitterly as sailing Representative John F. Fitz gerald (Democrat, New York,) as the "representative In congress of the predatory Interests" and denouncing big reported selection as chairman of the powerful committee on appropri ations, a letter from the American Anti-Trust League has been received by every Democrat In the house. "Behind Fitzgerald stand the Wall street trusts, who are Republicans when the Republicans are In power, and Democrats when the Democrats are In power," says the letter Fitz gorald takes his orders from Cannon and the trusts." The letter demands that Fitzger ald be not named as chairman of the appropriations committee. MOUNTAIN VIEW HAS BIG CROWDS There were hundreds of people took advantage of the excursion cars to Mountain View and Rabb's addl. tlon Sunday. The big Kelly motor truck had opera seats arranged on its deck, and about 200 were tnken up through the tracts of Mountain View property, ami many more wenj over the Rabb addition. The cars wore operated out to the Salom Heights school house, and the crowd rode out nnI back, and the demonstration was complete, as far as showing that a car service out that way Is popular. HARSH USAGE DEFENSE WILL UNDERTAKE TO SHOW UNUSUAL CRUELTY TOWARDS O'KOURKE BY GUARD SIMPSON AND OTHERS. The trial of Thomas O'Rourke, charged with an assault with a dead ly weapon upon Jerry Simpson, a guard at the state penitentiary, was commenced this afternoon In the cir cuit court with Charles L. McNary and Deputy District Attorney Wins low appearing for the state and Win. P. Lord for the defendant. O'Rourke was Indicted by a former grand Jury for the offense but his case was continued over until the present term. According to state ments issued at the time of Its com mission O'Rourke had been ordered to have his hair cut and when he de clined Guard Simpson sought to en force the order and he stabbed him. Will Try o Show Cruelty. That was the story told at that time but Just what story was told by witnesses to the grand Jury Is un known as Its proceedings are secret. It Is understood, however, that the defenso will try and show by convicts from the penitentiary an entirely dif ferent story. According to this story O'Rourke and Simpson had had trouble before and on the occasion he had been thrashed by Simpson. The defense will try to show that he had been thrashed so severely and treated so cruelly that he was cowed and that when Simpson tried to en force the order that he have his hair cut that he was afraid he would have to undergo another thrashing and took means to protect himself. The defense will also seek to show that shortly before the commission of the crime O'Rourke had been cruelly punished by having his hands tied up over his head for 10 hours a day for a period of 20 days and that during that time he had nothing to eat but bread and water.
