CHINESE BAY GO TO PORTLAND OWNERS OF THE PROPERTY IN CHINATOWN KAISK THE RENT SO HIGH THE CHINESE SAY THEY CAN'T PAY IT, AND MAY MOVE HAG AND BAGGAGE TO PORTLLAYD. Because the landlord has raised the rent on the buildings they occu py raised It to a price which they consider prohibitory every China man today is considering the advis ability of emigrating to Portland, and It may be that in a short time the whole colony will be gone, and the little town which they built and lived In for many years will be a mat ter of history only. , The city's Chinatown Is located on what Is known as the Hughes estate, and It covers a quarter of a block. For years and years the Orientals have occupied the moss-covered roof shacks upon it. In a way they built up a little town of their own; for It had its stores, Its eating bouses, drug shops and Its Chinese doctors, and In It they lived, worked, traded, gam bled and were happy. Rent Too High. That happiness gave way to gen eral gloom recently, however, for J. Frank Hughes has notified the lead ers of the colony that hereafter he will expect them to pay a rental which exceeds -that of previous years by about $10 per month. The Orientals feel that the rent they have paid in the past is as much as they can pay now, amd, as they view It, they must either secure other quar ters or emigrate to Portland. The leaders have looked around the city for other quarters, but there seems to be none available, and'the only alternative now seems Portland. Real estate dealers In ,tj)at city, the China men say, have made offers which are attractive, and. while no definite de cision has yet been reached, It looks very much now as though the Orien tals will soon take a last lingering look at the Capital City, and bid It farewell. There are about 400 Chinamen in the colony. IS ARRESTED FOR MURDERING HIS COMPATRIOT UNITED TRESS LEASED WIRE. Kansas City. Mo., March 29.
