PAGE FOTJB DaltT CAPITAL JOCRXAL, SALEM, OREGON", WEDNESDAY, MARCH 2, 1911. 1 i X I t u 1 i SITE FOR ARMY SELECTED BIO BUILDING WILL BE ERECT ED OX GROUND BETWEEN THE MARION HOTEL AND LIBERTY STREETS SITE AGREED OX YESTERDAY. After considering for the paat two weeks two sites available for the new armory to be erected In the city the one on th'e corner of Court and Cottage and the one to the rear of the Hotel Marlon, the general staff of the state mlllUa yesterday after noon decided upon the latter, and there will be erected upon It a $40, O00 building. In view of th'e fact that there was discovered today that there la, by reason of a legislative er ror $40,000 instead of $20,000 avail able this year for the erection or ar tnorldB, the plan as to the building may be changed, and made more elaborate, but the decision as to the site, It is understood, Is final . In order to acquire the site it was necessary to raise an additional sub scription of $2000, and this has now been practically accomplished, as the remaining badance Is assured. The state will contribute a like amount, making $4000, and this, when taken together with the other appropria tion made by the state and tho coun ty and city, will purchase the site and also erect a handsome $40,000 structure, to be used aa the state's headquarters for the state militia. 40,000 Available. Chief Clerk Corey, of the office of secretary of state, yesterday made the discovery that, through an apparent error on tho part of the legislature, there is $40,000 available this year. Instead of $$20,000 as intended. The legislature appropriated $40,-1 000 for the erection of armories In 1909, but the act Instead of reading that $20,000 should be available that year and $20,000 In 1910 reads that the first $20,000 shall be available In 1910 and the second in 1911. The last legislature appropriated $40, 000 for the same purpose, and $20, 00 of that is available this year and 920,000 In 1912, making $40,000 for this year, or $60,000 for the next two years. This discovery may have the effect of launching a movement which will have for Its object the erection of a more elaborate building on the site selected, as under the law the state will give an equal amount to that ap propriated by the nounty or city or subscribed by individuals. It Is a case of first come Bret served, and the first place appropriating money for an armory, and making applica tion, will get the money. HOTEL ARRIVALS Marion: D. DeWall, P. H. Harris, W. P. THE WOMAN'S WAT, TALKED APRONS FIRST UNITED TURKS LEASED WIHB Five women, all from one neighbor hood and all wearing aprons, stood on the corner of Front and D streets In North Salem this morning as the Are laddies sped by, and In want of other material for conversation, the question aroBe as to which woman wore the "worst" apron. After care ful scrutiny all around, . the prize was unanimously voted to the woman whose apron had been "made over," whatever that means. After settling this momentous question, the women next took up the question as to whose house was being consumed by fire. o Medicines that aid nature are al. ways most successful. INGS AND PERFECTING SPLEN. BID PLANT-WILL ADD TO SA LEM'S BIG PAT BOLL, There are few people who know what is being done at Salem to es tablish the manufacture of the Per fection Sewing Cabinet, an article of practically unlimited sale. This cor poration is not a transient enterprise but Is In the hands of men who are putting their best efforts and the best years of their lives Into the Industry. They have a large and valuable tract of ground on Fourteenth street, and have erected half a dozen substantial buildings, and are erecting two more on heavy concrete piers, building them right over Mill creek that runs off toward Turner. The character of the large and substantial buildings, and the way they are arranged and all the plans and details are worked out In such a manner as to Inspire confidence the moment a man goes over there and looks at them. The company Is stocked at $150,000 but not a dollar of stock has been sold that has not been put Into the plant. There are no salaries paid to the of ficials, except to President Yates, who Is only taking half the salary al lowed him by toe directors. The stockholders are on the same basis as the directors and officials bo far as owning the property and conducting the business. The ground on which the buildings stand Is easily worth $10,000, and $25,000 has already gone into buildings. When people speak of giving bonuses to get manufactures started here at Salem, they are generally speaking of something that does not materialize. Here is a concern that Is going ahead with Its own plans, and getting its own capital, much of it subscribed In Portland, and consid erable at Salem. What better evi dence of the confidence people have In our city than the way this enter prise is going ahead? That It can be made to pay Is based on the exper ience of practical men. The article Is inexpensive, is prized in every home, is made at a profit and the de mand is limited only to the people who can be reached.
