The professional politicians of Oregon breathe low, deep and silently when you ask tnem why the gross earnings tax on the big trusts and corporations was repealed "by implication?" Surely the farmer, the home owner, the store keeper were taxed high enough, and they might have let a tax law enacted by the people stand long enough to try it out in the courts. But no, the knife had to be put into a tax law enacted by the initiative and referendum that would have been pouring a quar ter to a half million into the treasury by this time, each year. Mr. U'Ren is busy preparing to carry Oregon for the Single Tax on land values, and has no time to take up the fight to pun ish the traitors to the people in this matter. All taxation laws are to spring from the people, and here was one initiated by the Grangers, and it has been ditched in the interest of the big non-tax-paying corporations. Not even the professional Grange politicians seemed to be stirred up about their baby effort being strangled in its cradle "by implication," the new process of getting laws ditched. But why not a committee to investigate and apply the recall to whoever was guilty of this iniquity? o : PEOPLE OF SIUSLAW HELPING THEMSELVES. The people of Siuslaw have had the courage to forge ahead and help themselves by organizing a Port Commission. They are building a jetty by co-operation with the general government, and are puttiaj,; up their own money for it. The state of Oregon has helped them not a dollar', and vhcn they try to get tide lands for the Port Commission they will have to pay for them. 1 The way the school lands and the tide lands of this state have been, "fooled" away is the principal cause of high school and state taxes. The Port Commissions that are developing harbors and add ing to the commercial resourcesof the state ought to be allowed to have the tide lands for a nominal sum. But the all-wise legislature would not pass a bill of that kind, as it would have been directly in the interest of the waterways and against the railroads. So nearly an hundred miles from a railroad, the people of Si uslaw are battling away to open the port and let shipping out and in, and in the course of time they will get a railroad. o SALEM IS GOING FASTER THAN EVER. With two new hotels going up, Salem will be as well equipped in this line as any city in tyv: stare. With two new railroads under construction, Salem will be the center of a value boom in 1911. With practically four miles of paving assured this year, there will be growth in all directions. The way an addition in West Salem, and one in Yew Park annex are selling, there is already a boom on. The construction of a magnificent sewer system is evidence that improved sanitary conditions will prevail in future. Although a stiff fight has been made to defeat public owner ship of the water plant, that matter is not dead by any means. The people of Salem voted for public ownership, about $3000 was spent on engineering, bonds were bid on and sold. The people have shown increasing interest in the matter, and if put up to them again would carry another election. The appropriations which the state, made in the last legisla for better water supply at its institutions would almost pay in terest on a public ownership plant for state and city. Salem is growing faster than ever, and the water plant and park property can never again be acquired for the prices now prevailing. UNITED FIK8S LEASED Vt IRC Flndlay, Ohio March 15.
