There was a largo meeting Satur day at Shelburn, Linn county," to arouse sentiment (or the construction of a bridge across the North fork of the Santlam river. County Judge Bushey and Commissioner Beckwlth, of Marlon county were present, as was County Judge Duncan and Com missioner Dutler, of Linn county, and all made addresses on the feasibility of constructing the bridge and ad mitted the great need of this im provement at the big meeting hold at the church. Went To See Site. There was a largo attendance of taxpayers and business men from Al bany, 8alem, Lebanon, Sclo, Crab tree, North Santlam, West Stayton and a large numnbr went to look at the site of the bridge. About 300 peoplo were entertained at a free dinner sorved at the Shelburn house. The farmers brought in cold meats, salads, cakes, pies, preserves, pickles, and canned fruit, while the good landlady of the hotel assisted by many othor good ladles, made several kettles of coffee and a big feast was spread before the visitors. The bridge will open an lmmonse terri tory of trade direct to Salom that Is now completely irtiut off. People have to a about 80 miles around now from elther Bide of the river. Will Take Several Spans. The bridge will have to be over 600 feet long, and will cost about $50,000. Croker said: "The situation ought to be re lieved immediately or it will prove a calamity to New York and the coun try. Tammany Is wrong to expect to wing all New York Democrats Into line without discussing the situation thoroughly. Some 14 of the members of the Junior class of the Willamette law Bchool have signed a pledge, each agreeing to allow his mustache to grow until the close of the school year In May. The members of this odd organization are beginning to be noticed because of their week's growth of beard of their upper lip. The promoters were Krank O'Conner, Joe Stearns and Perry Roigleman. An oratorical organUatlon has been formed in the Junior class of the law school which meets every Monday night In the recitation room In the College of Medicine. The organiiatlon la for the purpose of training the young lawyers to be perfectly at home be fore an audience and accustom them selves to thinking while, on their feet. Frank O'Conner Is president of this body and he gives the subjects to the students a week in advance. There are about 20 members. Robert Shepherd is absunt on a visit with his parents near Goldon dale, Washington. Shepherd is a member of the junior class and will return to his work In two or three weoka. Balm, Ors. . The railroad has heavy stone banks and rlprapplng to protect the bridge and keep the river in the channel. The towns of Shelburn and North Santlam will construct the ap proaches if the two counties build the bridge. One of the speakers for the bridge- was a pioneer, Mr. Mc Donald, who has been here about 60 years, and for many years operated a ferry boat across the river at this point lit Holland Colony. John Hartog, manager of the big Irrigation land district at West Stay ton was present and told of what his company are doing for the develop ment of that side of the river. He said over $300,000 had been Invested by his company and they had a pay roll of over $1500 per month for la bor Improvements. lie gave a glow ing picture of the future develoD- ment of that section and delivered a very eloquent booster talk. Senator Miller was also present and made one of his characteristic optimistic talks for the development of Oregon, and as a native son backed up what Mr. McDonald had said that the facilities for travel through the country were no better than B0 years ago. With the death of four more Ilawalians isolated at the quarantine station, a total of six deaths from cholera is recorded here today. It is feared that more will die.
