Magazine pub lishers hero today declnred that thn proposed advance In postal rates af fecting magnzlne advertising sec tions, was fostered by the ' Inter ests," which seek to control muck raking publications. They assert thnt the popular magazines will be the ones most affected by the bill, nnd that If the measure passes, sev eral will be thrown out of the mnr ket. A representative of McClure's magazine said: . "An Increase of four cents per pound for mulling advertising sec tions Would' cost McClure's $!2,S00 additionally. Our profits, nt best, are not large, and the resplt of the pro posed law would be loss of circula tion and standing. If the hill Is enacted It will Influence McClure's nnd similar publications to suspend." The Crowell company, which pub lishes the Woman's Home Compan ion, nnd the American magazine, de clares that the proposed advance would mean to It an increased ex pense of $!." .000 annually. Ireland, February 20, 19.11. His family was descended from the O'ftyans, princes of Trdone. Ills earliest schooling was under the care of the Christian Brothers In tho Naughton school In Dunlin. In 1S47 Ryan entered the seminary U Curlow. He was graduated when 21 years of age and came to this country with the Rev. Patrick Fee han to take up his work In St. Louis. Since lie could not yet be ordained for the priesthood, he entered the seminary at Carondolet as a profes sor. In September, ISM, Ryan end ed 20 years service as a missionary, lie worked ns assistant In the cathe dral of St. Louis and as attending priest In the Grattlot prison. Senator Roseberry, In the chair, re fused to have the resolution read, holding that the allotted time for the bills had elapsed. A wordy wrangle then followed upon the question whether the resolution should be re garded ns a "bill." The resolution recites the election of Works by "in surgent Republicans nnd progressive Democrats who believed him to be the embodiment of progressive prin ciples. In violation of the primary election law of California." Would Recall Senator Works Sacramento, Calif., Feb. 11 The recall of Senator-elect John D. Works Is urged in a resolution presented this afternoon by State Senator San ford. for Works' stand against the recall of the Judiciary. .Sanford's measure recited that whereas the legislature had elected Senator Works upon the progressive plat form, and that whereas that platform is In favor of progressive legislation, of which the recall of the Judiciary la a part, the legislature Is empowered to reconsider Its vote on Works. Senator Roseberry was In the chair when the resolution was pre sented. He ruled that It was to be considered as a bill, and that the time had expired for Its Introduction unless the rules were suspended.
