ORAKOE'S FROM CHANCE'S
GE0VE ARRIVE HERE.
Included in the train load of Cali
fornia oranges which just arrived
here frome the coast are several
cases from Captain Frank Chance's
grove near Los Angeles.
The "Peerless Leader" of the
Champion Chicago Cubs, has shipped
ail of the present crop from his old
ranch and Is at present looking over
his new grove recently "purchased.
According to reports from Chance
he stands to make a big profit this
season. He personally overlooks all
the picking and 'shipping of his oran
ges and it is a common sight to see
him carrying his men from place to
place in his big auto.
Chance grows two grades of oran
ges on his ranch the famous "Sun
kist" brand and the "Red-Ball,"
equally as popular on Eastern tables.
Last spring while on his way to
lead the Cubs on their spring train
ing trip, Chance brought a suit-case
full of his own oranges with him.
It was his intention to treat his
players. But he happened to men
tion the fact to one of his fellow
passangers, with the result that only
five were left when he finally reach
ed Chicago.
Pitcher Mordecai Brown and Orval
Overall of the Cubs, will spend a
couple of weeks with Chance this
winter and their boss hopes to con
vert both of his star pitchers to
orange growers.

DISCUSSES THE
DECORATION OF
THE HOME WALLS
In deciding upon the kind of cov
ering to be used on walls it is wise to
think first of the use of the room for
this decides at once a few points. For
Instance what is suitable for. the liv
ing room is never the thing for the
reception room and what is right for
the reception Toom will never do Tor
the den Then next consider the
light the situation of the room,
whether the light exposures are north,
south, east or west and the amount of
light Also whether the room is to be
used most by day light or artificial.
Next consider the size of the room,
also its height. All 'these points are
fundamental and can not be over
looked. These are the things that
decide the color to be used and color
well we none of us realize how
much color has to do with right liv
ing. It does not mean the same to
all individuals and for that reason a
good decorator studies the individual
ity of his patron. In one's own sleep
ing room one's own color should be
used and usually each person knows
what that color is by his decided taste
for one of the six primary or second
ary colors. Some are so susceptible
that to be surrounded constantly by an
adverse color one not found in his
make-up will irritate the nerves
even to the extent of prostration. This
is an absolute scientific fact record
ed in many instances.
To go back to the color scheme of
the general assembly rooms like the
living room, library or den, choose
the color best adapted to the'llght ex
posure of the room unless compelled
by other circumstances, like having
furniture, rugs or some other furnish
ing that must be built from. Blue
can never be used in a north room.
It is one of the cold colors and red
or orange Is not to be used In a south
room for they are the hot colors. In
a room with little light, use pale
tints and in the ones with a great
deal of out door light use the darker
colors and shades. Gray is now very'
much used. It is a beautiful neutral
color that makes a good back
ground, and generally that Is what
our walls are, merely a back-ground
for pictures furniture and brlc-a-brac.
Gray Is beautiful for a room
under artificial light. When the
'scheme Is carried out properly there
Is no more beautiful color scheme for
ball rooms and assembly rooms where
'ladies are wont to assemble, since it
makes a perfect back-ground; for any
, colored gown. I have done 'a whole
house where every room in the whole
house had some shade of gray on Its
walls and after living in the house
several months the woman declared
that, tie whole family liked It better
as time went on. Different colors, of
course, were Introduced in 'the hang
ing rugs and furnishings which did
away with any monotony one might
fear when thinking of such a venture.
Now for a material. We have so
many but I find everywhere the grow
ing tendency is for papers or fabrics
Instead of tinting or paint. The rea
son of this Is obvious. When one
tints or paints the walls must be
plain unless the decorator introduces
stencils or free hand mural work and
Unless the workman is a true artist
the result Is more often disastrous
than otherwise. Then there is never
the richness nor depth to either,, that
there is to any fabric. Wall papers
can be had from 30 cents to $10.00 per
roll and the cheap ones are 'good in
color and artistic in design. Just a
little information concerning the
making of wall papers may be of use.
They are either hand blocked or ma
chine made. On the machine the re
peat is necessarily limited to a cer
tain length, about twenty Inches and
the result Is therefore more monoton
ous generally speaking. It would be
almost impossible to turn out one of
our finest fr'.&ze papers by machinery.
Then machine papers must be printed
with thin colors wliich means a loose
thin color effect. Large figures such
as big leaves, broad stripes or flat
flowers, that have to be printed In one
color to make the two toned papers
are never such a success when done
by machinery and then the surface of
the paper must always be smooth or
flat. Hand blocked papers are sim
ply done but it requires skill on the
part of the workmen. There are as
many different blocks as the pattern
and size of the paper demands. Each
color Is allowed to dry- before an
other Is put on and no color touches
another until dry, while the machine
papers are all done at one operation,
one on top of the other. Until recent
years we have not been able to get
domestic made papers anywhere
equal to the foreign but the last year
or two they have learned to neutralize
their colors, thus taking away that
crude appearance and they are, some
of them, perfect copies of the Im
ported or of equally good design.
This last year there has been a
decided leaning toward fabrics such
as damasks, tapestries and etc. These
are put on the walls without paste
excepting at the edges and are lovely,
giving a richness and depth that
furnls.ieB a room as nothing else can.
The Jtites are made of linen, mercer
ized and are very lovely In texture,
although not so very expensive. It
takes one who understands to hang
them but when well done they are
durable and beautiful. There are
beautiful things In high relief for both
walls and ceilings that come ready to
be put on as one does . wall paper.
I TheBe are imported and . are a boon
where, a room lacks architectural
features. In the next article I will
go into further detail concerning
j walls and wall hangings.
