The land surrounding Monmouth la a Tery black, rich, slightly rolling prairie, dotted here and there with wt beautiful groves of oak and lir. On the west the coast range of mountains, with their Intervening foothills, He In the lap of nature with such beauty aa can be round in fair places on this fair earth; while on the east, at a distance ol seven mllce, a lovely range of bills, which rise In oiagesty to a thousand feet, are cut by the Willamette river which fertilizes the whole surround- tai country. The climate is exceedingly fine There can be no more healthy place found anywhere. Apples hang on the trees while I write, December J 8th, sound and beautiful, and vege- tables grow in the gardens, while grain la knee high and roses are In bloom in our yards; while the birds twitter and ajng as though It were Spring. Men go around without their coats and everybody is happy, healthy and goodiooklng, The country around Monmouth grows In great abundance, clover, timothy, oats, wheat, barley, corn, kale and cabbage, In fact every thing. There Is no easier place to live and get rich. One prosperous farmer, born and raised here, and now said to be worth one hundred and twenty mo thousand dollars, has made bis money here. He owns nearly two thousand acres of land and none Is more satisfied and happy Dairying. It would Indeed be hard to find a better place for dairying than Mon mouth. In the edge of town one mac has a very largo dairy. In this thhro are twenty head of cows Im ported directly from the Jersey Isles, and one bull has Just been brought ju, wmcn cost nearly four thousand dollars. The writer, a few days aeo. aaw a fine herd of Imported Jersey uairy cows, pass through the town, about sljtty in all. The farmers especially the dairy farmers, around here, bolleve In the very best and wey nave It. Sheen and Goats. This Industry, too, has wonder fully developed here; many have been lmportod from foreign countries at great cost, and so well have they developed here that they are resold at a great price here and shipped to -ail parts of the world. I have never een uner specimens of goats and aheep. But why shouldn't they be fine? They are In green fields, knee high at this time of the year. Apples, pears, cherries, grapes and all kinds of berries grow in very great abundance and the sloping well drained land cannot be excelled for these. Game. Mongolian and native pheasants big grey squirrels, grouse, quail ducks, geese and brandt, aa well sb very fine fishing, make this a. very great place for the boys. So that the problem of keeping the boys on th farm has here been solved to a alcety. Walnuts of every descrip tion grow splendidly here.
