Masy Industries contribute toward making the Capital City and im portant industrial center, each one of which has materially assisted in the development of the surrounding territory through utilizing the raw material produced. One of the rni.e important of these is The Salem Flouring Mills Company which has for many years past conducted Its splendid plant, uttilizlng wheat grown in Oregon and for which It pays out to our farmers many thousands of dollars annually for wheat aside from contributing largely to the prosperity o'. local merchants th'Dug.l a large annual pay roll, distributed among thirty employes. The plant is modern and complete in ever respect and has a daily capacity i:f 400 barrels of high gradn fionr. This finds ready market in li's country while extensive shipments are also mnde to the 'Tr'int nnl Hawaiian Islands. However, iwtb ot Wild Rose flour, the leading brand. pi fer ii t.i till other make i-nt! a very lar.ne proportion of rsudeuls nf this pare (f the country use it con stantly. All flour Is made ff n.cst carefully selected wneat, in milled by men thoroughly skilled Ir. their trade and is of that satisfying, uni form -luality so greatly desired.' With a view to having constantly available a sufficient supply of wheat to keep the wheels constanttly mov ing elevator capacity of 150,000 busheJs has been provided In addition to which large warehouses are also maintained for storing wheat In sacks while the bins in the mill also hold large quantities, so that taken as a whole there Is never any diffi culty experienced by the management In "making things move." Central ly located at Commercial and Trade streets where rail and water trans portation facilities have been pro vided, It Is possible for outside ship ments to be promptly forwarded In any direction, Insuring satisfactory trade relations with dealers every where an Important factor In the days of modern busines methods In the successful operation of any In dustrial establishment. Officers of the company are men who are thor oughly familiar With every detail of the flour milling business, and who also enjoy a high standard in fin ancial and trade circles. They are: Wm. Ladd, president, and W. P. Babcock local manager. A large and rapidly, growing trade Is enjoyed In bran, shorts and other feed stuffs, the management finding it necessary to purchase from other millers in order to meet the local demand. The Salem flouring Mills Company is an enterprise, which means much to Western Oregon and with the further development of the country will ex ert a still stronger beneficial In fluence. KLKCTR1C FIXTl'KK & SUPPLY COMPANY. With modern and progressive ideas with reference to electrical work of every nature and a thorough understanding of electrical fixtures and work, the management of the Electric Fixture & Supply Company at 245 North Liberty street keeps this establishment fully abreast of the times and gives the people of Salem and vicinity the most up-to-date service in electlcal lines ever furnished them. W. K. Barnell Is in charge of the enterprise, which is unquestionably the most complete in Western Oregon outside Portland. Mr. Barnell has enjoyed a wide ex perience in his chosen field of oper ation and gives all customers the benefit of his knowledge. There Is nothing whatever In the way of fix tures and electrical supplies which may not be had of this enterprising house while wiring for all purposes is also done, the skilled workmen employed Insuring entire satisfaction on all occasions. Silver, copper and brass plating Is done by the com pany and In this way old fixtures which have become tarnished are made to look as good as new while many other articles may also be "made over" at low cost by having them Dlated. Rut It Is electric wir ing and supplying fixtures that the uuiuimuy uus expenencea me great est activity for the many new resi dences and other structures erected in Salem more recently have been equipped with modern electrical ap pliances and the Electric Fixtures & Supply Company has done a very large part of the work. This Is due to the fact that their operations are conducted on a large scale and they enjoy many advantages over the smaller dealer. They take contracts for wiring and supplying fixtures complete for residences and business bouses and the prices quoted are al ways an inducement to award them the contract. Their establishment has been of benefit in furthering building operations in Salem and will prove equally beneficial In the future when building operations will exceed those Of any previous period. ! ij Rodgers Paper Company Wholesale Paper Dealers Everything Paper Thoroughly Equipped Ruling and Binding Plant Fine Blank Books a Specialty 220 State St THE FALLS CITY L I'M HER CO. An. enterprise which has contrib uted as much as any other to the general progress of Salem and the currounding territory is that of the Falls City Lumber company for through the operation of its fine large plant at Falls City it is in posi tion to furnish lumber direct to the consumer at lowest prices and ot the very highest quality. A large plant for the manufacture of doors and window frames and other mill work Is also operated and a planing mill run In connection with the Salem yard makes is possible to furnish either rough or dressed lumber, interior finish, or other grades of hunber to fill contracts for entire buildings of any magnitude. This is a distinct advantage to the contractor and builder as better arrangements may be made where the entire bill re quired is purchased of the same party. Then the question of prompt delivery is involved, those dealing with the Falls City Lumber Company being certain that no delay will be caused through non-delivery. A very large stock of all kinds and grades of lumber is carried in the Salem yards and as six teams and about thirty men are employed it may readily be seen that painstaking care is given to all orders and they are promptly filled- Shipments are also made to outside points In car load lots and the'business of the com pany in that line is showing a rapid growth since it took over the Vogt Lumber company about a year and a half ago. The saw mill operated at Falls ClUf has a daily capacity of 100,000 foet and the company owns a large amount ot standing timber whtrh insures its continuous opera tion for many years to come. As the question of an adequate lumber sup ply at right prices has a direct bear ing upon the building operations of any section of the country the efforts of The Falls City Lumber company mean much in the growth of Salem and the further development of the surrounding territory, to which thousands of people from all parts of the East are flocking with a view to making their 'homes. The manage ment is enterprising and progressive, modern business methods being adapted in all transactions. Officers of thei company are: F. S. Belcher, president; W. F. Stlne, vice president; W. T. Grler, treasurer and manager, with Julius Vogt in charge of the Salem end of the business. He is a gentleman of wide experience In the lumber trade and widely known as one of the genuinely substantial citi zens of tha Capital City. In addition to the manufacture and sale of lum ber of every description the company also deals extensively In building material and builders hardware and contractors in Salem and the sur rounding territory will find it most advantageous to purchase whatever they require of this enterprising es tablishment. Wood and coal are also dealt in, both wholesale and retail, and a large business enjoyed. o C. M. EPPLEY'S FAMOUS BAKING POWDER. All sorts of manufacturing enter prise are Included In constituting what might properly be termed in dustrial Salem and as a result all sorts of commodities are sent out bearing the Salem label, thereby further making known the Capital City to the outside world. It may not be generally known that" one of these Important Industries is a bak ing powder factory, the product of which finds ready sale all over the West and which is also becoming popular in a constantly increasing territory. However, such is the case and C. M. Eppley, the popular East Salem merchant is responsible for the establishing of the enterprise and to his energy and ability is attribut able the material success already achieved. Mr. Eppley started ' the manufacture of baking powder some what as a side issue, as it were, to his general merchandise business at Nineteenth and State streets but it has grown to very considerable pro portions and now requires a great deal of time and attention and is destined to a prosperous future. Notwithstanding that Mr. Epply gives the baking powder factory h-is per sonal attention he nevertheless finds time to keep fully abreast of the times in the conduct of his large department store at that location, an establishment which is .liberally patronized by residents of that sec tion of the city and in which every thing required by the family Is car ried and sold on close margin of profit. High grade goods, low prices, prompt delivery, courteous treatment of all patrons alike and strictly mod ern business methods have built up the splendid establishment a dis tinct credit to the ability of Mr. Eppley who is one of our most progressive citizens and a persistent and consistent booster for the growth of Salem and the further develop ment of the many resources of Oregon. Salem, Or. T. S. TOWXf-iKXn CISEAMEIIY CO. The first creamery to be estab lished in the city of Salem it is not strange that the Townsend Creamery at 137 South Commercial street is more widely known and the most successful establishment of its kind here. It is also by far the largest, having a. churn capacity of 1,000 pounds while the equipment permits of three churnings per day. The home office of the company Is In Portland and branches are operated at various points, each of which is equally successful as the one in Salem. Here is manufactured the justly popular "White CIovit" brand of creamery butter, the leading grocers of all Western Oregon cities recognizing it as distinctively their leader while consumers demand It on all occasions. The Townsend Cream ery is a further convenience inas-, much as cream may be purchased at' any time and in 'any desired quantity, while Its operation means much to the dairying interests and has done a great deal in inducing more of our agriculturalists to engage in that pur suit. The highest cash price Is paid: for cream and shipments from a wide! territory are received dally. Further more, the establishment furnishes, stendy employment for a number of, skilled workmen, the pay roll averag ing $f00 per month. The greatest degree of succes has been achieved under the very able and progressive management of Adelbert A. Under bill, a gentleman of wide experience in this line of business and who is regarded as one of our most astute business men and enterprising citi zens. No plant of the kind any where Is better equipped or Is kcpt In more perfect sanitary condition, this feature being considered of the utmost importance at all times. All machinery and appliances are thor oughly sterilized and at no time is the cream or butter allowed to be come contaminated through contact with objects which might be unclean. As an employer of a considerable number of people and In distributing large sums of money to farmers In this part of tha state the Townsend Creamery Is one of the more Im portant industries of tlje Capital City and is destined to exert a still strong er Influence upon the general pro gress and prosperity of this city and surrounding territory. o TILSON & CO., IXC. The Prune Packing industry at Salem is represented among others by Tillison & Co., Inc., who have packing houses at both Salem ana Roseburg. They have packed at these two places mainly at Salem, approximately six million pounds each year for several seasons past. About one half of their fruit they have sold in Europe, the remainder In Canada and the United States. They do a strictly commercial busi ness. Buy their fruit outrtlght, and pay spot cash for it when delivered. The fruit growers after many years of experimenting have found it more profitable! and much more satisfac tory to sell their fruit and get their money on delivery than the uncer tainties, long delays and usually un satisfactory results of association methods. The prune Industry is a growing one, is more stable and less speculative, and generally more profitable than any other branch of fruit growing. Its future is certain. o WILLAMETTE VALLEY PltUXE ASSOCIATION. In a recent Issue of the Saturday Evening Post in an article dealing with the question of marketing var ious products and discussing those men most responsible for present conditions, H. S. Gile was recognized, as practically the "Father of the; prune industry of Oregon" in that it was through his efforts that prunes from this part of the country were given a place beside those of Cali fornia and that they are now very geinerally recognized as the highest standard In the prune markets of the world. Certainly this is a distinction worth having and the best part of It is that It was entirely unsolicited and unknown to Mr. Gile until called to his attention. Locally it has been realized that Mr. Gile has exerted a highly beneficial influence upon the prniv.) industry in many wava but this kind of national publicity is not enly phasing but also benefHai to Mr. Gile personally and to Western Oregon as a whole. As manager of the Willamette Valley Prune Asso-, ciation Mr. Gile has looked after the marketing of a large proportion of the prunes raised In this pa.-t of the' cotiniry and because of his Intimate knowledge of the business has been j able to secure the highest returns to prune growers. In Eastern and ! foreign markets Mr. Glle's name la widely known and bis judgment! readily accepted so that he enjoys aj strong advantage over most others in this industry. The operations of the Willamette Valley Prune Association have been of inestimable value In all respects, from three to four millions of pounds of prunes being dried,! packed and disposed of annually, for which large sums are distributed among growers of the valley. Furthermore, employment is fur nished to a large force of people dur ing the busy season, the volume of money flowing through local trade channels being thereby materially in creased and merchants and dealers generally benefited. The plant at High and Trade streets is modern In every respect and consumers every where recognize no brand of prunes as superior to the famous "Pheasant" brand of the highly successful Wil lamette Valley Prune Association. In addition to being secretary and man ager of this large undertaking Mr. Gile has other extensive Interests, is prominent In civic affairs In Salem and one of the really representative business men of . this part of the state. o 1 . W. F. BUCHNER'S FEED MILL. This Is an establishment which Is of Inestimable value to the farmers of this part of the country as well as stock raisers and owners. It Is by all odds the largest and most successful feed manufacturing enterprise In or about Salem and is kept constantly grinding to meot the demand. Furthermore, In order to supply all customers Sir. Buchner is forced to purchase feed In large quantities, which he sells at his feed store, which Is operated in connection with the mill at 887 South Commercial street. Mr. Buchner is one of the older resi dents of Salem and has been engaged in his present undertaking for many years with a far more than ordinary degree of succes. Throughout his active rareer he has always shown a! direct interest In the welfare of the Capital City and Invariably lends his assistance to boost projects of a legiti mate nature, realizing that there Is still opportunity for material growth and the further development of con tiguous territory. . He has always enjoyed the high regard of all who know him, his honorable business methods having fully established his absolute Integrity. Farmers or others having feed to be ground will get the best service at Buchner's Feed Mill and those In need of feed will be able to buy it there at lowest prices and with satisfaction guaranteed In all Instances. This enterprise has al ready been of material benefit to Salem and surrounding territory by making it possible to keep money for feed here at home and will still more benefit as the country Is further de veloped. The plant Is equipped with the latest and beat machinery so that feed may be ground exactly as de sired. o SALEM FENCE WOIIKS. - Charles D. Mulligan has been Iden tiftod with this industry for a num ber of years although he bought out Mr. Morley only about four years ago and took active management of the institution. During the inter vening time he has greatly increased the volume of business donet, his strictly modern methods proving highly satisfactory to all having rela tions with him. Then there is an other reason for the liberal patron age which is extended to the Salem Fence Works and that Is that people generally have learned that they may secure a better quality of any kind of fence of Mr. Mulligan for less money than anywhere else. He manufactures fencing for every pur pose and a Specialty is also made of a light wire gate which finds ready sale all over Western Oregon, being far better than any other similar gate offered on the market. His fence is for field, lawn, poultry, etc., is of all heights and always of the best quality. He carries a large and comprehensive stock of ffmce posts, iron and wood gates, P. & B. ready roofing find shingles, hop baskets, slat fencing staples, nails and other materials required In connection with the erection of fencing. He is one of the public spirited business men of Salem and always ready and willing to lend his assistance! in the further upbuilding and progress of both the city and surrounding terri tory. 0 ! E. S. LAMPORT SADDLERY CO." If there is any one thing for which Salem is especially noted it is the enterprise, energy and progresslve ness which characterizes her leading business men. Among those who profess belief in the future greatness of the city and who has for forty two years been closely identified with her best interests should be mentioned Mr. E. S. Lamport of the E. S. Lamport. Saddlery Co., which is located in well -equipped quarters at 219 North Commercial street and where an Immense stock of high grade harness and saddlery and other horse furnishings is carried at all times. Mr. Lamport has been estab lished and actively engaged in this line of business longer than any other man on the Pacific Coast. In addition they carry a fine line of leather suit cases, grips and hand bags and shoe findings of the best quality and their prices are extreme ly low in every department. The manufacturing department Is a special feature of the business, and all of their harness is of the highest quality, only the best of material be ing used while special care and at tention Is given to the workmanship. The Messrs.; Lamport conduct their business along honorable and up right lines on all occasions and their goods are sold and guaranteed as to quality, style, j finish and price. Mr. Lamport, Sr., I has the distinction of not only being the pioneer harness man of the Pa cific coast, but also the pioneer business man of the city of Salem and has seen the city grow to her present proportions. In enumerating the varied and numerous industries and commercial interests of Salem, there are certain institutions, which by reason of their o K' F. E. SHAFER. superiority over other houses of similar nature seem to call for more than passing mention. One of these is the harnes store of Mr. F. E. Shafer, which is located at 187 Com mercial street. Mr. Shafer has been engaged in the manufacture and sale of harness in the city since 1891 and he has during the entire time inter vening maintained the highest reputa tion for making only the highest grade of harness, in which the very best of oak tanned leather is used and upon which the workmanship Is of the finest quality. From a small beginning Mr. Shafer'g business has grown until a force of seevral expert assistants are required and he has in stalled one of the latest model wax thread sewing machines, which was made necessary by the rapid increase In the demand for hie excellent har ness. All his harness are sewed with hard wax, his entire equipment being run by electric power, the only one In the valley outside of Portland. All goods are sold under a positive guarantee. His trade is extending each year and is now drawn from a large . territory tributary to Salem. Mr. Shafer is a man in the prime ot life and he probably has many years of usefulness ahead of hlin all of which we are pleased to hope he will spend In Salem for he is everywhere known as one of our best boosters, never losing an opportunity to sing the praises of Salem and Oregon. , o CHERRY CITY PLUMBING & HEATING CO. Their prices are Invariably low as It is possible to quote on flrst-class work and it will pay builders to get their figures before letting contracts. o 5 X. 1. ELLIOTT PUINTKK. It is seldom that genuine ability applied to any line of endeavor falls of succes but there are Instances where this is exemplified In greater measure where strong executive ability coupled with progresslveness and enterprise place a man at the top and mark him as one possessing the "get there" qualities. Such a man is N. D. Elliott, whose well known and liberally patronized prlnt ory is at 224 South Commercial street. Mr. Elliott does not simply run a prln-' shop but he is a printer in all that the word implies. Ho thinks printing by day and dreams -"" 44-f- "57 K. Spalding llllllflISi-:' JmimMm K, H v ' ! The knowledge Mr. Elliott hag acquired is the result of years of actual experience and constant study. He never had an idea that he "knew it all" but was willing to profit by the other fellow's experience in order to be better able to furnish his numerous customers Just exactly what thew might require. He does it, too; and In consequence is kept constantly busy with a modernly (quipped plant and large number of skilled employes. While everything in the printing line is given close and prompt attention a distinct specialty is made of high-class office and busi ness stationery. That is where N. D. Elliott particularly shines. He can design and print a letter head which literally "speaks for itself." At any rate It shows mighty good judgment and discriminating taste. That is the kind you want, also, isn't it? See Elliott then. See him for any thing and everything in printing. He is better equipped, turns out better work and more promptly than others and always at right prices. Notwith standing that he Is kept more than ordinarily busy in looking after his enterprise Mr. Elliott also takes great Interest in the welfare; of Salem, is a member of the city council and chair man of the committtee having charge' of the sewer problem. Mr. Elliott Is also chairman of the Mountain Water Committee, having in charge the question of buying the water system and securing and adequate supply of mountain water, one of the most Im portant problems which has con fronted the city officials In many yearB.
