rie Kersh, found guilty of man
slaughter for complicity in the mur
der of William Johnson, a Washing
ton farmer at "he New Grand Cen
tral Hotel Juno 20, will be sentenced
January 5 by Judge Morrow. Tho
verdict was returned by the jury last
night at 6 o'clock, after the Jurymen
had been out over 72 hours. During
the deliberations over 100 ballots
were taken.

duracy of -one Juryman saved Mrs.
Kersh from, conviction of murder. D.

lieved the woman Innocent, and he
held out for acquittal xitll the last
ballot, when his conferees, who had
attempted in vain to convince him of
the woman's guilt, finally descended
the rungs ' In the degree of murder

dict 'she fainted and was carried
from the court room"' She was tv
ported to bo HI today from the strain
of the trial and shock superinduced
by her conviction. -' ' '
The murder of Johnson attracted
wide attention owing to the fact that
Jesse P. Webb, his murderer and
Mrs. Kersh attempted to do away
with the body by stuffing it In a
trunk snd shipping it. The body,
however, was discovered by a bag
gageman whose suspicions were
aroused by blood which dripped from
the receptacle.

Victoria, B. C, Dec. 21. Con
tracts will be awarded within tha
next few days for the construction of
two faster and larger trans-Pacific
Empresses for the C. P. R. as well
as for . two largo and .fast steam
ships for the improvement of the
company's trans-Atlantlo and Pa
cific fleets. The plans and tenders
were placed before a meeting of the
directors of the C. P. R. at Montreal
a week ago and discussed. All the
directors were present at the meet
ing and it was stated that an official
announcement will be made within
a few days as to the awarding of the
contnet. ' ,

SOME ONE SET FIRE
TO THE MAIL BOX
Los Angeles, Calif., Dec. 21.
The postal authorities here are In
veatlgatfng the mysterious firing of
a mall box in one of the residence
sections of the city. They bellevo
the blaze was started by some per
son desiring to destroy a letter
known to be In the box. The fire
was discovered by a postman, who
believes It was started by dropping
a lighted match through the letter
slit. None of the contents of the
box is believed to have been de
stroyed. .
Swamper Gets a Fortune.

Montag, known as "Fireball Bill," a
swamper In a saloon here, has fallen
heir to 3116,000. 'Montag Is pack
ing up his few belongings today, pre
paratory to leaving for Germany to
claim his estate; .
Montag left Oermsny 20 years ago,

ceived remittances regularly for
while, but, after lie had refused to
return home,- these ceased.
Montag was notified of his good
fortune by the German consul at San
Francisco yesterday. -
