settling the boundary line along the
Columbia river between the Btateg of
WaRhinRton and Oregon.
The lant conference which had for
its object the accomplishment of thla
end was held last siting. After con
sfderlng the subject at length then
it was found that to change the
boundary line it would be. necewary
t. have a resolution passed through
congress giving the states such au
thority, aa it had been fixed by a de
cision of the supreme court of the
United States. An appoal was made
to the delegations of the two eta tea
In congress to have such a resolution
passed, and, this having been done,
the officials now are anxious to reach
an agreement with regard to the
boundary line, so that it may be submitted-
to the legislature of the
two states for ratification this winter
Inlands Bone of Contention.
The bones of contention with rela
tion to the boundary line is Sand
Inland, which, according to the su
preme court decision, was awarded to
Oregon. This Inland is situated so
close to the Washington aide that it
la feared by the Washington people
that some day it will completely shoal
up, and in which event the state of
Oregon would exercise , ownership
over a portion of the state of Wash
ington. The Washington authorities
desire to avoid this condition of
affairs and . at tha conference to
morrow a proposition will be made to

campaign that alma at the abolition
of capital punlahment In the state of
Washington. Mrs., 8Urtan la circu
lating petition that will be offered
to the next legislature,. n4 be de
clares that hundreds, of voters have
expressed their .willingness to sign
them.
Mrs. Stlrtan said today: L
"I have talked to Judgea, attor
neys, men of many professions, ana
prominent business men, and I find
the sentiment agalns' capital punish
ment Is far more general than the
public realizes- I believe the next
legislature will repeal this Inhuman
law of the dark ages, if cltlaons will
take time to sign the petitions."
A bill repealing the law for capi
tal punlahment will be Introduced in
the legislature by Representative
Francis P. Gobs, of Seattle, according
to the statement of Mrs. Stlrtan.

have been made yesterday at chapel
meeting by President Homan, of the
Willamette University, that he would
expel any student of the school of
liberal arta who attended the dance
given last night at the Auditorium
Rink by the students of the medical
college, there was no attendance from
that department. One of the etu-H
denta of the lberal arta department
had decided to attend, despite the
threats, and. accompanied by his
best girl, proceeded to the ball, but
after reaching It, and talking the sub
ject over wltb students of the med
ical and law college, he abandoned
his intention ai.d returned home.
The dance was the first given by
the students of any department of
the University, and because the
achool la a denominational institu
tion, whoss religious lines are op
posed to dancing, It created consid
erable, of a aensatlon among the fac
ulty. President Homan, according to
reports, aa soon aa he learned of the
dance, denounced it In vigorous
terms, and, while be bad no author
ity, seemingly, to prevent students
of the law and medical college from
attending, he had over the students
of the college of liberal arts, and
stated that he would expel any stu
dent of hla department who attended
the dance. A report gained currency
that he bad also decided to decline to
sign the diploma of the atudents of
the medical and law colleges who at
tended, but, whether thla la true or
not could not be learned, aa Presi
