ASTORIA COMING
This, Tuesday, evening the people of Astoria will give the
opening banquet in honor of the Astoria Centennial.
The celebration will be held at the new hotel the Weinhard
Astoria not the Woldorf -Astoria.
It is a beautiful four-story building, erected by the Welnhard
estate of Portland, with a roof garden.
With its annual water carnival, Astoria has gained quite a
reputation as an entertainment center.
The enterprise celebrating the one hundredth anniversary ot
the arrival of the Astor ships is meeting with generous approv
al all over the state.
. , The completion of the new hotel and the taking up of the next
step in placing Astoria on the map are all matters of public in
terest '
Salem people an the whole state will join in the recognition
of this great historical event of white men landing for settle
ment. ,

We have now elaborate laws, with Dairy Commissioners and
deputy inspectors.
" But published statements are that we have 12,000 less dairy.
, 'cows in Oregon, and are making2,000,000 pounds less butter a

But we pay twice as much for it as we did before we had such
. laws, so the dairymen are not complaining. .
But a lot more laws' to create inspectors'for the men who want
jobs in the dairy department are badly needed.
, Laboring people in Oregon who' can be hired to milk cows at
less than one hundred dollars per month are needed. . .
N Butter Is rapidly becoming a luxury for the rich and the com
mercial travelers at three-dollar a day hotels. .
Cream with thousands of well-to-do families has long since
been out of the question.
But give us lots more state and national legislation to spread
on our slapjacks, that Is what is needed.
Our government Is rapidly hastening intd paternalism and self
extending officialism. ! -

OUR DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR.
This paper Is asked to give a lot of space to the report of the
Department of the Interior.
We are more Interested in our own department of the interior.
To keep the family supplied with boiling beef and potatoes
and buckwheat cakes is far more important.
By the way, a man who owes us two years' subscription
ehould bring in those potatoes he promised.
If we held an office under the Department of the Interior we
might give it a whole page of space in this paper.
We have yet besides a department of the interior that asks us
questions sometimes and is hard to answer. ,
It is the mental machinery that has to be kept from getting
squeaky, as well as the digestive.
The reports of well-fed government officials away down at
Washington cannot be put in the kettle and made part of a boiled
dinner. ,
We regret that we have no space for the official reports of
the Department of the Interior, nor a hundrea other depart
ments. We feel about them like Senator Logan in the Constitutional
convention when providing fpr the legislature.
He said it should meet once in ten years, and then repeal the
acts of its predecessors. '

San Francisco, Dec. 13. John T.
Spear, 81, for many years secretary
or the Society ot Pioneers of Cali
fornia, is dead at his home here.
Spear was a prominent hanker in
his early days In San Francisco and
was a member of. the banking firm
of Hlcock and Spear.' Spear came
to California In 1849 via Cape Horn.
