LEASED WIRE TELEGRAPH REPORT THE DEATH OF MRS. EDDY. This event calls attention to the life of a remarkable New England woman. Her stupendous lifework was a reaction against the material istic' tendency of this age. ' That such a woman should have come from the old Granite state of New Hampshire was not remarkable. A state that could produce an Emerson, a Webster, a Whittier could produce a leader In religion. . Mrs. Eddy placed the crown of dignity on the brow of Ameri can womanhood by her, supreme conception of a higher life. What will become of her organization time alone will reveal, al ' though there is reason to hope it will survive. So light are the ties of the divine brotherhood, and so keen Is the appetite of human selfishness that a noble and pure ideal is Boon torn to pieces. But in the long march of the centuries Truth will care for her own, and the realities of the universe will not be dependent upon ' poor human stewardship. ' ' Mrs. Eddy's life work needs no commentary, but will remain a guiding influence in the affairs of the world for centuries to ' come. , WHY TAX THE BUSINESS MAN ALL THE TIME. Th6 proposition to have Oregon commercial bodies defray the expense of exhibits. at the Eastern land shows ought to be sat up. ori hard. These land shows are for the purpose of enabling land rrionop olies'to sell their lands to settlers. - ' ' ' ' Why should the general business man be taxed to send exhibits to boost the land monopolist's business ' "A single apple grower at Ashland sent a carload of apples at his own expense to Chicago, an.3 it paid him big. Why should the general public be taxed to boost the special in dustry that is especially profitable? ' ' Why should not the fruit grower, the sheep grower, and the cattle grower and the land baron boost his own business for his own benefit?. There is too much of this loading all the burdens of publicity and promotion ana developmental! the general business man. Let the .business men help boost the community in which they live, but let special industries take care of themselves. There Is much paternalism and cold-blooded grafting in some of these enterprises called boosting. o ENCOURAGE SMAU HOME SEEKERS. To get large numbers of home seekers to Oregon, there must be homes for the great multitude who have small fortunps. k John M. Scolt, of the Harriman pasenger department, voices tho idea that fruit lands ore too high. His idea is that largo numbers are kept away by fictitious and speculative values attached to fruit lands especially apple lands Lpuis J. Hill said, on seeing Oregon prune ranches: "This land is worth 2000 an acre." How many home seekers can buy country homes in Oregon at $200 to $2000 per acre? There must be cheaper lands available on a large scale before there can be openings here in Oregon for large numbers of the home seekers of smaller means. What to offer the family that arrives in Oregon with $1000 to $2000, that is the problem. They cannot buy apple or pear or prune lands at Hood River, Salem or Medford. Practical plans for the location of home-seekers on small farms, or lands within their reach are very much to be desired. ; o ( MANUAL TRAINING A NECESSITY. J L The development of Individuals with higher ideals and better equipment for service is the matter of most importance. That is why I am in favor of more manual training and less book learning in our Bchools. If a boy or girl can read and write and figure as far as the rule of three, they can get all the rest. That is, if their .minds run to business, to literature, to a profession, they can follow that to success. "'' BUt it takes time and instruction to learn how to use tools and make things, or at least to get started. ( And the individual develops in doing those things and grows efficient and valuable learning to do things. The world needs workers and the boy or girl who learns to do gome useful work is educated. Those who have not learned to do something useiul are in line to become idlers and drones. Klotlng and vio lence In many parts of the United Kingdom today marked tbe third day of voting. Election! occurred today for 75 members, . representing 67 constituencies, but, owing to heavy rains over tbe country, .amounting to floods In the country districts, the polling waa light. The bitterness of the controvarsy has given rise to many contests In tbe constituencies that have held elec tlons. Charges of fraud were made, owing to the fact that many persons voted under the registration of 18 months ago. There have been thou sands of deaths and removals since then, and the losers are claiming that the vote was fraudulent. That the Liberals and thrfr allies will control la no longer In doubt. The Conservatives bent their ener gies today to reduce the Liberal ma jority. In order' to cause a legislative deadlock. " ' At the beginning of the voting to day the results of the elections thus far stood: Conservatives 63, Liberals 50, La borltes 7, Nationalist 6. University It Oregon, Eugeno, Or., Dec. 6. As a result of an editorial in the College Dally here, It Is pre dicted today tbat the co-eds of the University of Oregon will taboo cabs and automobiles as an adjunct to college dances and theater parties hereafter. Under the caption "Cab Lady," the editorial gives expression to a sen tlment which has been felt among the college men that the cost of ve hicles Is more than some of the male students can afford, and should be discarded by all. A canvass of the students Indicates that only a few can pay this luxury without sacrifice, and It Is contend ed that these few should overlook their personal wishes In order to re lieve the: larger portion of the stu dent body of such an obligation, and save embarrassment to those who can not afford to pay. ' It Is probable that the co-eds will make an organlzod eftrot to assist In the scheme to terminate the "cab habit" at Oregon. With a view of organizing a co-operative selling agency company to dispose of the $5,000,000 apple crop of the Pacific Northwest each year, Homer C, Atwell, president of the state horticultural society, will Issue .1 call to the growers of Oregon. Washington and Idaho to meet in conference at Portland within the next 60 days. It is understood the the call will be Issued immediately. The company will be capitalized at $500,000 and will be formed along the lines of those perfected by the orange growers of Southern Cali fornia and the raisin growers of thi Sacramento valley. It is expected that the. new system will assist much In solving the mar ket problem for tbe growers and ot the same time will Increase their financial returns. In discussing the plan President Atwell said: "At the meeting of the Oregon Horticultural Society this year the necessity of a more efficient organi zation for marketing apples was plainly shown in tbe discussions. "While very little trouble Is ex perienced In marketing fruit In the East. It has been called to my atten tion thnt fruit from one valley ham mers down the fruit from another. On account of this and the lack of system, the principal markets are glutted while minor markets are neglected with a result thnt the best prices are not obtained by growers. These Inefficient methods of market ing and not excessive volume of output, are at the bottom of the danger of over production."
