Cannon will be speaker of the last iwMilon of the present congress when It convenes next week. Is a question which Is agitat ing the political world here. That James R. Mann, of Illinois, mar be speaker Is a report that Is being generally circulated toda, following Si conference between the speaker, President Taft and Mann. None of the principals In the con ference which lasted more than two boars would say what Its subject was, hot that It was held before lha caucus for the selection of the Re publican nominee for speaker i considered significant by many of th congressmen already In Wash ington,. Mann, It s believed, would be ac ceptable to the Insurgents, as well its the regulars. A, MUSICAL Tlffi I1EXT WEDNESDAY Virginia Dorothy Hill Is woman of gracious personality; she Is no loss attractive and popular off the stage than on the stcge. She has that magnetic quality which, coupled with musical temperament, and a regal presence, compels admiration, sympathy and r flection. It was not until recently that she could be vr uaded to undertake a concert tour, but In a very short time sha has Crown to like the platform better than the stage, and to revel In the opportunity affordod by the concert for the display of her vocal versatili ty. Her repertoire ranges from the most difficult Wagnerian operas, light peraa and ballads, and ddwn to the old delightful Irian, Bootch and Southern melodies Being a daugh ter of the sunny South, one of those true American types, she never for ests her own country's composers. CANADIAN PROVINCES WILL GUILD GREAT COAST HHiHWAY WILL REACH FROM MEXICO TO WIN NII'KO AND UK MOUK THAN 0,000 MILKS IV LENGTH. Honorable Thomas Taylor, minis ter of public works of Rrltlsh Col umbia, has asked the western Cana dian provinces of Alberta, Saskatch ewan, Manitoba and British Colum bia to cooperate In the construction of a modern trunk line highway from Winnipeg to Vancouver. British Col umbia has had Just such a highway planned for some time and will be gin active construction soon. Al berta also has such a work well In hand and the matter Is now exciting much Interest In Saskatewan. It Is planned to complete this work within the next three or four years, and as the Pacific Highway Associa tion will have IU MexIco-to-Canada highway, connecting at Vancouver with the Canadian system, In oper ation by that time, there will be the continuous stretch of modern high way over 5,000 miles In length, ex tending from Mexico to Winnipeg, Such road would be the longest modern highway In the world and would undoubtedly bring more money Into thi coast country than all the railroads combined. It Is the opinion of many author ities that the highway would not at tract as many vtaltors as all the rail roads combined, but the people who did come would have more time and money to spend. It would also be possible for tourists to remain long er In the places that they liked and In that way It would be possible to for people who are contemplating coming West to select a home. At the University of Washington there Is a testing labratory where all road building materials may be test-j etd. There Is ro charge made for counties and cities within the state, and but nominal one for places out side. This will make It possible to select the very best materials and In sure a good and lasting highway when It Is flniHhod. During the polneer work on Western road building large funds were wasted, because It was Im possible to tell what materials should be used, but, with a testing station, there Is no danger of that happening again.
