DA1XY CAPITAL JOUKNAJU SALEM, OREGON, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 101 0. !AC.R SIX. INSIST ON OBEDIENCE TO THE LAW .WHOLKHALERS AND 1IRKWKRS OF PORTLAND WILL ASSIST IN KNPOKCINa SUNDAY CUSIXi JjAWVMiK REVOCATION OI LICENSE FOR VIOLATORS. Portland, Nov. 16. The Oregon State Brewers' Association, the Ore gon Wholesale Liquor Dealers' Asso ciation and the Oregon Retull Liquor Dealers' Association, at a joint meet ing yesterday afternoon recommend ed that the penalty for saloon keepers keeping open Sundny, soiling liquor on Sunday and violating other laws regulating tho liquor traffic, be rev ocation of tho license, and the city council is urged to take this drastic action. Tho following statement., prepared by Paul Wesinger, president of the Oregon State Brewers' Association; 8. Julius Mayer, president of the Ore gon Wholesale Liquor Dealers' Asso ciation, and C. D. Eldor, socretary of tho Oregon State Hetall Liquor Deal ers' Association, c: Monday, was ap proved by the Joint inference: "The man Kalmbac'u, who threw open his saloon on Sunday and sold liquor In defiance of law, was either a simple fool, the toy of prohibition ists, who, in the chagrin of defeat, are seeking to embroil unsuspecting saloon men, or a man willing to break the law for a fleeting profit. In eith er event he deserves no sympathy, and will receive nono from the or ganized liquor Interests of Oregon. We respectfully urge the city coun cil to cancel this man's license. .We respectfully urge tho city council to cancel the licenses of any liquor deal er who violates the Sunday closing law, or any other law regulating the liquor trafllc. If this man Kalmbach was misled or misinformed for the purpose of procuring a violation of the Sunday closing law, we re-poctfully urge that the proper authorities prosecute the person or persons who so misled or misinformed him. If, as has been stated, such person was an officer of the law, he should be summarily re moved. But even these extenuating circumstances, if they obtalnod, should not entitle Kalmbnch to con sideration. If a saloon keeper who has passod through the recent cam paign in the state of Oregon doesn't know enough to Inform blmsolf re garding the law, be should not be al lowed to keep a saloon. If the mu nicipal court bad assessed a fine of $500, Instead of $25, Kalmbach and other saloon keepers might be taught a lesson ,but the punishment should not stop with a fine the li cense should be revoked. Revocation of license is the only adequate, reme dy for violation of the liquor laws. We urge the vigorous prosecution, According to the law, of every person -who In any manner vlolatos any law regulating the liquor traffic. "We Invite the co-operation of all persons who, In good faith, doslre to bring about better enforcement of laws regulating the liquor tratllc." Ef forts to reach the 83 persons who number the crew and passengers of the doomed steamer Portland, and who are now stranded on Katalla Island, were made today. The food supply on the barren Island is piti fully small. Only a few hardy fish ermen have homes on the island, and it Is certain that their scant stores cannot sustain the people of the wrecked steamer more than two or three days. The stoamHhip Alame da will make another attempt to get out of this port today. The .storm Is growing hourly In Intensity, and It is hardly likely that the Alameda will be able to make any more pro gress than yesterday, when she re turned to port after trying to make headway against the storm for 12 hours. An appeal was made to the govern ment this morning to send a revenue cutter to Katalla island with food sup plies. Tho Portland Is a total loss.
