TOLSTOI GOING INTO EXILE.
1
All his life Tolstoi, the uRssian reformer, has protested
against the iniquities and cruelties of sending exiles to Sibe
ria. , ,
, But, different from other reformers, he now proposes to
end his life in exile.
There are a great many reformers in this world who are
unwilling to take his own medicine .
There are many men who are your friends ,but who are
not willing to spend a dollar on you.
There are preachers who dilate on the charms of the next
world, but they love this world far better.
Tolstoi, going into exile, is one of those rare instances of
a man living up to his utterances ,and meaning what he says,
LET THERE BE A CLEANUP.
f
There should be a cleanup of the saloon business all over
the state of Oregon,
That is what the Home Rule victory means.
People generally are satisfied with the way saloons are
conducted in the city of Salem, '
But there are very bad saloon conditions in Portland, As
toria, The Dalles and on Coos Bay,
Vicious saloons will not be tolerated .
The State Home Rule Association should not allow that or
ganization to be dictated to by saloon men or prohibition
ists. .
There are fanatics on both sides of the question.
Neither are safe guides for the proper solution of the evils
and abuses of the liquor traffic.
Fair minded business men and property owners are to bo
considered and consulted,
Oregon going wet does not mean Oregon stands for dis
order. There should be an absolute separation of the saloon busi
ness and all forms of vice and lawlessness.
The people still have the local option law, and can vote any
community dry where the liquor business is not carried on
fight,
The dive and the lawless saloon have got to go.

THE FROST WAS ON THE PUMPKIN .
The People's Power League Law Factory got a chilling
, frost in the election the other day,
Out of thirty odd propositions only seven have pulled
through so far, and crankisms generally were defeated.
Woman Suffrage, Prohibition, State Gazette and million
aires commission to estimate liability were killed,
The common sense of the people aserted itself and
the time has come when cranky feature of existing measures
can be amended.
The cranky features of the registration law, the weak
points of the primary law must be remedied,
The following are the measures that have been adopted:
An act authorizing tho establishment of a branch insano
' asylum in Eastern Oregon
A bill providing for the permanent support and mainte
nance of the Oregon Normal School at Monmouth,
The Home Rule amendment.
An employers' liability law.
A bill prohibiting the takingof fish from the Rogue river
except by angling.
An amendment changing Judicial procedure ,terms of
The good road amendment.judgcs, etc.
PARTY MUST HAVE NEW LEADERSHIP.
Tho Republican party must have new leadership on broad
er ground and with a strongerorftanization.
There is nothing in tho Direct Primary law to prevent he
publicans coming together and deliberating,
They should do so and should adopt platforms and rec
ognize men of natural ability and leadership,
Any political party is benefitted by friendly conference and
discussion and strong organization.
But tho people must not come together in a spirit of opposi
tion ot progressive policies and popular laws.
The people are sound at heart and want what is right and
can be trusted to use political power intelligently.
But tho spirit of the past that sought to drive men out of tho
party on non-essentials was a mistake.
The leadership of the future must consist of something be
sides playing into the hands of the Democrats.
1 The third trial at a general election vindicates the adoption
of the Direct Primary law in Oregon.
It has cost the Republican party an United States Senator
and a governor, but it was not the fault of the law.
It was because the Republican Machine management at
Portland made war on the Direct Primary law.
Republican leadership that assails the expressed will of
lhe people is entitled to defeat.
A popular and able Republican .candidate for governor was
ernor. is a young man ,and ha votes, n .
This in a state that is nominally 20,000 to 30,000 Repub
lican ought to settle the question.

Tho legislature and all other

The Direct Primary-law is completely established, and at
next election there wil be no war on it.
,
Jay Bowerman, who was the Repubican candidate for gov

He should not be dismayed at his defeat, as he was made
the victim of political circumstances.

learn wisdom in the dear school of experience.
The Republican party has suffered for years in being too
large and unwieldly, and will be better trimmed,
The Democratic party was a minority party playing all its
cards to take one trick successfully,
Perhaps the defeat has been "providential, and may teach
the party to learn wisdom by conference and co-operation.
But Mr. Bowerman is a man of too much ability to be
soured by defeat, and will come through the fire unsinged,

In the house the Republicans still
control both branches of the Idaho
legislature, despite the Democratic
landslide at the recent election
which resulted In the election of the
Democratic candidate, James H.
Hawley, to the governorship over
Governor Brady, who was seeking
re-election.
Complete returns are now In and
they show that the house will bj
divided as follows: Republicans 37:
Democrats 22. In the senate there
will be 14 Republicans and nine
Democrats.
The Republicans claim that they
will hnve the necessary two-thlrdi
majority to force through the con
stitutional prohibition nmendmcn;
that would make Idaho a dry Unto.
To do this It would be necessary i)

will cast their ballots for prohibition

When a remedy has lived for over thirty years, steadily

is it not reasonable to believe that it is an article of great

We challenge the world to show any other one remedy
for a special class of disease which has attained such an
enormous demand and maintained it for so many years as
has Lydia E-Pinkham's Vegetable Compound, the famous
woman's remedy for woman's ills. Unless it is a very good

Before my marriage two years ago, I suffered something awful

Since then I have never been troubled with pain not even a

Mrs. E. E. Boss, 113 E. Church St., Corry, Pa.
When a woman like Mrs. Ross is generous enough to
write such a letter as the above for publication, she should
at least be given credit for a sincere desire to help other
suffering women. For we assure you there is no other
reason why she should court such publicity.
We say it in all sincerity and friendship try this medicine.
For 30 years Lydla E. Pinkham's egetable
