HOFER, Manager - Wvflk- Nr w Often In winter you dare not open a window, even though the room be warm, because the cold air makes a draught that is dan- ferous. With a Perfection Oil ieater there need be no danger from draughts. Open the lower part of the window a little, put the Perfection Oil Heater in front of it, and the cold draught will be turned into a pleasant, healthful current of fresh air. The reputation of Salem has suffered by the way road companies have been treated here, Mr. Cordray, the lessee of the Grand opera house, has had to fight to keep the Capiatl City on the circuit of first-class attractions. Manager after manager has cancelled engagements at Salem, and played to good houses at Eugene and Medford. It hurts any city to get to ths class with towns where a fifteen-cent limit marks the int3lligen,ce of the population. Theatre people go away cursing such towns, and the next time they mak&Tfie circuit pass up the community. The bad advertising a city gets from being a bad theatre town is almost equal to being a bad hotel town. Salem has heroically overcome its bad hotel reputation. When the New Marion Hotel (forever be forgotten the former name) opens its doors the stigma of an evil hotel rep utation will be taken from Salam. Our Board of Trade and Business Men's League should take up the matter of a better reputation as a theatre town. Nothing would advertise Salem so widely as to have every theatre company go through the country boosting Salem. There are a hundred ways of wasting money on advertis ing, but an hundred busin.ess men who would take their fami lies to every good play would b2 doing good advertising for the Capital City. It would be a disgrace to Salem to open a first-class hote1, and close a first-class theatre. Let the commercial organizations take a hint and do some real good advertising for the Capital City. o J VJAY BOWERMAN IS A GOOD FIGHTER. nir ni ii COLORLESS CAMPAIGN Ifl SALEM SMALL RKUIHTRATIOX AMI NO INTEREST TAKEN' IX CITY AK- FAIRS McXAItY WILL NOT UK CANDIDATE. IT IS TO LAUGH The Republican candidate for governor elicits admiration because he is a good fighter. When he talks to a campaign audience he strikes telling blows straight from the shoulder. He does not spend his time telling funny stories, To Jay Bowerman life is real, life is earnest. As a poor boy in Marion county he was not hunting soft clerical jobs, He mauled rails and hauled cordwood for a living. He.has hands and arms and a physique developed by hard labor, In the legisature he was always dead in earnest for or against a proposition. He has come up from the ranks of the toilers through hard ship, and represents the laborer and the producer, He has held no lucrative political jobs and has not made any easy money in politics. Three dollars a day for forty days has been the limit of fat jobs with him in Oregon politics. He turned down the big trais-continental railroads, and voted for the people's railroad amendment. Jay Bowerman is a good fighter, with clean hands, on the side of the common people, The Republican party is fortunate in having a fighter for fundamental principles as its canddiate for governor this year, KICKED BEFORE THE GAME VXIVERN1TY OK rilil.T SOl'M) HOYS IUI WARM TOXUl'ES hit coi.ii feet. axi so isko tih: romii u ix uik.it I'l XTI.NtJ KIT XT.
