A. Mock, who has been at .large
slnco last Tuesday night when ho
stabbed and killed J. C. Smith in
this city In a quarrel over a dog.
was captured this morning by a
posse made up of cltlzons of Talent,
south of this city.
Since the crime Mock has been ly
ing in tho hills back of Talent. Last
evening, his provisions being ex
hausted, he came out to a little cab
in and finding a woman there alone,
compolled her to give him supper
The woman complied with his de
mands and sent her 11-year-old boy
to Talent with word. A posse was
immediately made up and Mock was
captured without difficulty. He is
now lodged in the county jail.
Murdered by Mexicans.

Hughes and W.Hpent, construction
bosses on the Durango extension of
the Mexican National railroad, were
stabbed to death near here today by
Mexicans. The men are said to have
been drinking, celebrating the cen
tennial, and to have attacked Hughes,
killing him after a struggle. Dent
rushed to Hughes' rescue, and met tho
same fate.
An investigation will bo started at
once to fix responsibility for the
cave-In qf tho structure, a throe
story building. It is believed that
excavations made adjacent whero a
building is being erected, caused the
bu'ldlncr to fall.
The second nnd third stores of tho
building were occupied as a lodging
house. Mrs. L. It. Carty, the land
lady, felt the building trembling
and warned her lodgers. She was
caught in the debris, but was not
severely hurt.

L. Glennlster, a retired sergeant of
the Seaforth Highlanders, of Great
Britain, attempted suicide here today,
when ho tried to effect a reconcilia
tion with his wife, whom he believed
had deserted him.
Glennlstep served in the Boer war,
and lost hlB s,word arm In service. His
wife left him two weeks ago, the po
lice say.

Thomas, 45, a sheep and cattle man,
of the Cabbage Patch, district, idled to
day at the local hospital, as'the re
sult of wounds Inflicted by his step
son, Arthur Hunt, 28, late'yesterday.
Hunt, who gave himself up, is in the
county Jail here, charged with mur
der. Tho men quarreled over the distri
bution of property, left by Frank
Hunt, father of tho man in Jail. Bad
blood is said to have existed between
them, for several years. Hunt says
he shot In self-defense.

At 2:30 this afternoon, after the
polls had been open but two arid one
half hours, the Indications were, In
the several wards of the city, that
tho vote would greatly exceed tho
registration, and will probriily be
much greater than any vote previ
ously polled at a primary election. In
wards 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the city more
than one-third of the registered vote
had been cast at 2:30 this afternoon,
nnd many of the votes had beon sworn
In. Slnco the voters aro silent con
cerning their sentiments, the result of
the election cannot be prognosticated,
nor oven guessed at, until after tho
votes are counted this evening.

though tho pollco still hold to the
theory that tho body found In tho
basement of tho Eureka-street house
Is that of Eva Swan, former school
teacher at Paso Robles and recently
employed as stenographer In San
Francisco, tho Identification was
shaken this afternoon by Mrs. Har
ry Weir. Mrs. Weir who Reopa the
roomlng-houso nt which Eva Swan
lived, believes that the detective?
are mistaken. She bases hor belief
on the clothing found In the trunk
in the basement of the house whom
the body was discovered.
Tho wisps of hair found in the
trunk bonoath tho concrete corres
pond with the color of Miss Swan's
hair, Mrs. Weir declares and the col
or of tho hair on tho head of the
girl, though stained from the ncld
poured over it nfter death, is dissim
ilar. The report goes on to say that the
internal organs aro decayed. Both
legs aro sawed through near tho an
klo, the partial amputation was
probably performed after death, tho
physicians think.
Tho report does not give tho prob
able cause of death. Tho'ro is no
mention mado of any operation hav
ing been performed.

Mario Messerschmldt, who Is under
arrest with Dr. Grant In San Fran
cisco In connection with the finding
of tho body supposed to bo that of
Eva Swan, lived horo most of her
life. Hor father Is Conrad Messer
schmldt, a shoemaker of South Ber
keley, and sho hns sovoraL brothora
and sisters living.
Miss Messerschmldt attended the
public schools of Borkoloy and tool;
hor training for nursing at Boose
volt hospital. Until five or six
months ago sho lived with hor fath
er, Slnco then sho hns been living
at tho homo of her sister, Mrs. I.
Nlsson In San Francisco. Hor rela
tives, say sho has been employed by
Dr. Grant for about 10 months.
No formal charge has ds yet boon
mado against either Dr. Grant or
Miss Messerschmldt. The police
aro first desirous of discovering all
possible evidence. Dr. Grant and
Miss Messerschmldt both refused to
discuss tho matter when newspapor
men called today. They referred
tho questioners to their attorney,
John Greeley.
Bon Gordon was questioned again
by tho pollco during tho morning.
His statoment was taken down by
stenographers.
Dotectlves today say that they
havo discovered a witness who saw
Miss Swan return to tho offlco of Dr.
Grant on tho day of hor disappear
ance. The name of tho witness has
not been given out.
Tho witnesses asked to Identify
tho body of the girl woro shown Jow
olry which was found In tho posses
sion of Dr. Grant. Among tho arti
cles Bhown wero ring's from which
tho sotting had beon removed.
Clothing found In tho trunk taken
from tho Eureka-streot houso wore
also given theso persons for Identi
fication. A worn skirt and a num
ber of underskirts, torn and sollod,
woro found in tho trunk. Homer
Hatch telegraphed tho detectives to
day that he would comio at onco to
San Francisco and holp them as
much as possible in cloarlng up tho
mystery of tho girl's death Hatch
is a graduate of tho Iceland Stanford
university. He has known Miss
Swan sinco both wore students at
tho Paso Bobles high school nnd
they havo long beon close frlonds.
After tho girl's disappearance tho
pollco say, Hatch helped thorn in tho
Boarch fojr hor.
