Hoter held five street meetings from his automobile last night at Fair Grounds, at the State street Electric, grocery at' the Yew Hark store, at the Shaw & Poisal grocery in South Salem, and pulled up to the Adolph cigar store prompt ly at 9 o'clock, where a large crowd of friends were assembled Met All Accusations. His meetings at all the places mentioned were well attended and he was greeted with applause on arriving and on leaving, and the plain, common citizens showed their respect and ap preciation of a clean campaign, At each place he stated he vas ready to answer any question and to meet any accuser, On State street he especially called out Tom Cornelius, pres ent street commissioner and c'ty marshal, who allowed the charge to be made that Col, rioter had tried to bribe him with a sum of $60 per month to let gambling games run in this city, But Mr, Cornelius was not there or if he was he would not show himself and didn't show himself at any of the meet ings, and the challenge was repeated at each place, A BIG MEETING. At the Adolph Cigar Store Mr. Hofer repeated his challenge tc all-his accusers who have spread broadcast attacks on his character and there were cries for McMahan who was in the audience and Mr. Hofer waited for him to come forward, but he kept in the dark until Mr, Hofer said goodbye to the crowd when he got up in an automobile around the corner, provided for him. and entertained the crowd with a rehash of his inven tions, Many of the crowd remained to hear McMahan out of curiosity and because human nature likes a scrap of any kind, but he made no impression, He sprung one new lie and that is a remarkable record for McMahan to make when he is turned loose in one evening, His statements fell flat and he produced the effect of being a hired advocate to bemean a man who is not wanted by the man who hires McMahan to do about all he does, as McMahan notoriously does not interest himself in public matters unless there is something in it, SECOND. CH'AMBERLAIN LIE. McMahan made the statement that when Governor Cham berlain was. up for his second election Colonel Hofer demand ed $520 of him for the support of The Capital Journal, and Chamberlain "told Hofer to go to Hell," What are the tacts? Col, Hofer went to Governor Chamberlain when Dr, Withy combe was nominaetd as the Republican candidate and told him he was going to support Dr- Withycombe but that The Capital Journal would a low no one to throw mud at the Chamberlain administrat on and that Governor Chamberlain as a candidate would not have to spend any money to keep at tacks out of The Salem Journal nor to get protection, but that he would be treated well and t airly without money and with out price, because he had .made' the state a good governor, This was strictly carried out and after the campaign was over Governor Chamberlain thnaked Hofer Brothers, and said he had never been treated as well by two men in his life, and had not been treated as well by any newspaper as by The Capi tal Journal, That is the truth, and Mr, McMahan is a liar in his statement, VOTE WILL PROBABLY LIGHT REGISTRATION DESIITE THE INTENSE INTEREST TAKEN IN THE CAMPAIGN AND THE GREAT PRINCIPLE OK THE PEOPLE'S RULING AT STAKE, IS SMALL, WEXFORD A POPULAR PLAY HOUSE UNDER THE MANAGEMENT OK MR. The big campaign Is over and be fore another 24 hours shall have rolled around, each and every one of the multitude of candidates for tho several offices, to bo handed out at tho suffrage of the voters of tho state of Oregon, will have known hl3 fate. The campaign In Marlon county and the city of Salem came to a close last evening, when political fever and fervor was at Its height. with a number of public speeches to large and enthusiastic audiences in soveral parts of the city by Col. E. Hofor, who spoke from tho tonneau of his Ford automobile, which has Covered over 4,000 miles throughout every section of the state during the campaign, and was roundly cheered by tho Immense crowds which greeted him at every meeting place, Because of the light registration In this nnd every county of the state, notwithstanding the state wide and nation-wide Importance of tho political Issues which are up for final decision nt tho hands of the voters today, It Is expected that ths vote enst at the primary election to day will be necessarily light and the contest, In many . Instances as be tween candidates and party issues will be closo and Interesting. Tho polls opened for the receipt of votes throughout the state, at noon today, and will remnin open until 7 o'clock this evening. Tho indications, at the hour of going to press this nfternoon, arc that the vote will bo light, as compared to previous primary elections, when is sues of lesser importance were up for consideration, but the heavier vote, ns usual, Is expected to mater ialize between the hours of 5 and 7 o'clock this evening when tho labor vote will bo polled. Tho several polling places within tho city of Salom, aro located as follows: Polls open 12 noon, to 7 p. m. Ward No. 1 Walkei"s barn. Ward No. 2 City Hall. Ward No. 3 State nnd High streets.
