Tho local police today received word that Por ter Charlton was seen In Lucerne, Switzerland, last Saturday. Tho Swiss police' say they traced Charl ton to Lucerne, whero he disap peared. Meanwhile Constantino Ia- polatoff, a Russian, is being hold on suspicion pending the investigation of tho murder of Mrs. Mary Scott Castlo Charlton. Other European cities report having seen Charlton. Opinion here is divided regarding tho identity of tho murderer. Many believe that Charlton's disappear ance places him under suspicion and attribute his possible action to Jeal ousy or indifference for his wife, to whom ho had been married only three months. Others believe that Charlton was murdered by tho same persons who struck down his wlfo, and thrust her alivo into tho iron bound trunk to drown in tho lake. Tho police, at tach significance to this theory and are again dragging tho lako in an effort to find Charlton's body in case he has been murdered. The authorities also began a more systematic search of Villa Legnazzl, which tho Charltons occupied. Tho grounds around the villa are being dug up under tho supervision of the chief of police. The chief of police and Consul Caughy of Milan believe Charlton was murdered; tho remain- dor of the police, including special , detectives, believo Charlton was the murderer. The polico of Milan and Rome, who aro working on the case, wero unablo to break down Ispolatoff's story that he last saw tho Charltons on tho day before the murder. Is- polatoff was awakened suddenly to faco an accusation that he bought a set of brass knuckles from liassi, c druggist at Cernobbio. The Russian calmly denied that ho ever had seen tho knuckles before Tho lack of tangible evidence 15 driving tho police, again to the the ory that some connection exists be tween tho murder of Mrs. Charlton and that of Miss Estella Reld in Na ples. Nothing definite has xbeoa learned by them to causo such bo lief, so far as can bo ascertained. Tho police, who believo Ispolatoff Is tho murderer, assigned robbery as a motive for the crime. Ispolatoff, discussing his acquaint ance with tho Charltons, saiu- "I saw enough of tho Charlton's married Hfo to make ,lt impossible for mo to lovo Mrs. Charlton. Charl ton told mo things about his wife which might havo preyed on his mind, leading him to kill her." The police refused to say what tho allogod accusations of Charlton wore. Charlton's Coat Found. Como, Italy June 13. Fishermen this afternoon found a coat in Lako Como, bellovod to bo owned by Port er Charlton, husband of Mary Scott Castlo Charlton, whoso body was found in tho lake. This strengthens tho theory that Charlton was also killed by tho person who murdered his wlfo. o ri'i. 1 11 1 T .. 1 lilt: j'.iiiu i?iua-uiju x .ilium . Mrs. Hardin and Mrs. C. M.
