There, are, as far as the writer ever heard, but two plat inum quartz mines in the world ono In the Ural mountains and one in Australia and in both of these the platinum is a secondary consid eration, other metals being of greater value. Mr. Bailey is quietly enthusiastic over the outlook and is proud of be ing the first mining engineer to dis cover in an American mine platinum in paying quantities. , It is also a matter of pride to Ore gon, orf will be if the mines prove esren one-tenth as good as they are thought to bo, if she adds platinum, which is more valuable than gold, to her long list of products. t The mines are located five miles west of Merlin and on the west side of Rogue river, some three or four 1 mlle3 above the famous Hell Gate, on that stream; and there is a good wagon road to within a mile of the claims. The ground was located the 15th of last November and is owned by six men Mr. Bailey being ons of them. There are 29 claims and a fraction in all, and It Is understood they have pooled their claims, all standing in together. As Bailey describes the ledge, it surely is a wonder, but as he Is tak ing wide-awake business men down his statements are not exaggerated. He says the ledge Is highly mineral ized for a width of 600 feet, 200 feet of which is a bright pink sac charine quartz, SO feet of other quartz, 150 feot of spherulitic gangue, 8 feet of pitch blende and the balance of other mineralized gangue, each character of rock be ing divided from its neighbors by strong seams of gouge. Many assays have been mado on all characters of the rock, and they run from an ounce of platinum up to 65 ounces, which, valued at $22 an ounce, and platinum is worth more than that, makes the ore val ues run from $22 to $1400 a ton This seems good enough, but on top of this the ores carry tin, In which assays show from 2 to as high as 59 per cent. These assays were made by D. L. Johnston of Grants Pass. Several assays were made by C. O. Boyer, chemist and assayer of the Oregon Technical Laboratory of the could do, the measure was referred to a committee which reported it back to the house favorably after a brief recess.
