WILL HHMH 81 tt-HM-Qj P I BWfrtt 1818181 OO99099649 1 CM Q After making a thorough inspec tion and investigation of tho county court jail and the' offices of the coun ty officers in tho .Marlon county courthouse, tho grand Jury at a late hour yesterday afternoon submitted its report to Judgo Galloway, rec ommendlng that tho courthouse be provided with ft, heating plant, that tho county jail bo so fitted up as t,o eliminate all danger of prisoners ef fecting their escape, and that the in terior of tho court house proper bo so remodeled as to afford better ac commodations for the county officers and its patrons In general. Offices Inadequate. According to tho report submitted the assessor's office is badly in need of a suitable cabinet for the storing away of the public records; and re ferring to the office of the county recorder, tho report says that ' tho jury found it In a congested condi tion because of tho lack of working and vault room and that that officer has been compelled to store records on tho floor, which has resulted in their damage. The county clerk's office, the re port also says, is crowded and in need of more room both working and vault room and the sanitary conditions are bad, as it-Is located over the kitchen of the sheriff's of fice, and that the odors from it find their way into the office. Jail Totally Inadequate. Tho county jail says the report, is totally inadequate for a county hav ing a population of about 50,000 people. It Is set forth that it is pro vided with no quarters for female prisoners; that its ventilation is in adequate; that there are no quarters provided for the keeping of desper ate prisoners, and that its walls are in such a condition that there is ab solutely no bar against desperate criminals escaping. The report also sets forth that there are no lavatories provided for female employes at the courthouse; that there Is a lack .of space In tho surveyor's office, so that the grand jury room has been appropriated to liedp out. And summing up, the re port finally recommends that -tho In terior of the building be remodeled so as tomeet all these needs; and that a heating plant be provided; but that the remodeling work must not go to that extent that.lt takes in the exterior of tho building and thereby mar its "exterior archltei tural beauty."
