UNITED MESS LHASED WIBB. Piteburg, an. 2G. One of the tragedies of baseball, the rise and fall of John R. Walsh, the convicted Chicago banker, who is now in the federal prison at Leavenworth, is be ing recalled today by prominent lead ers of the National and American leagues, who are meeting hero as a joint rules committee. Walsh was the owner of the Chi cago National league baseball club, -when the revelations of his financial operations wore made, resulting in his imprisonment for a term of five years. Walsh, in his endeavor to re coup his falling fortunes, sold the then champion "Cubs" for $105,000, although Charles Kominsky, at the time, would have given MOO, 000 for the club. Tho story related by baseball men is to the effect that Jim Hart, an ex ecutive of the club, under Walsh, hearing Walsh contemplated selling the "Cubs," rushed to Cincinnati, and told Garry Herrmann, of the banker's decision. When Hart arrived ho found Chas. Webb Murphy in Herrmnnn's office. "Here's a chance for you to get into Tiaseball," Herrmann remarked to Murphy. "Get some one to put up 310.5,000 for the Chicago Club." Murphy, who had been press agent lor the New York Giants, and had done sporting writing for Charles P. Taft's paper at Cincinnati, and knew the owner well, went to see the "brother of President Taft. Berry is on the water wagon, and according to his confident as sertion,' he's there for five years. When Berry appeared radiant and resplendent in a new necktie and hat at the meotlng of the Coast League magnates the dther evening, his fellow ball barons guessed their was something in the wind and when he refused to do the honors at a thirst emporium, or even be a party to the affair, the following reason was detailed by one of his friends. "Berry's brother has offered him $5,000 a year for five years if he stays on the wagon. Berry Is after the coin, and believe me, he's going to cash. Even a year would help some, Jnit Hen. thinks that twenty thousand is as good as in his bank. ' JEFFRIES WILL TRP TO APE ROOSEVELT After his championship battle with Johnson iiext July, Jim Jeffries, according to recent press dispatches, is going to follow the example of Col. The former champion has signed a contract with Denver publishers to permit their staff writers and mov ing' picture men to accompany his party, but the terms of this contract are unknown. Jim may get all ho wants of Africa before he starts on the trip. o A Sprained Ankle. Judge Galloway this iriorning rendered a decision in favor of the plaintiff In tho case of W. C. Mount against J. R. White ot al. The de fendants in this case reside in the vicinity of Mount Angel and iie suit was commenced hy tho plaintiff, W. C. Mount, for tho specific per formance of a contract for tho sale of some hops. According to the evidenoo ad duced In the case a contract was en tered into between Mount and White and the other defendants whereby the defendants agreed to soli him the hop crop' from 5G acres for tho year of 1909, and $800 was paid down by Mount for the cultivation of the crop. Just at. about the time the hops were ready for picking Mount was advised by tho attorney of the defendants that they did not consider the contract binding and that they rescinded it. Mount then tendered them $2,000 to cover tho expense of picking tho hops but the defendants decline to accept It and Mount then commenced an action for the specific performance of the contract. The defendants came in and set up thb charge of fraud al leged that the contract had been changed, but Judge Galloway this morning held that they had failed to sustain tho charge and directed that the 40,000 pounds of hops be turned over to Mount and that tho other terms of tho contract bo com plied with. The firm of Carson & Brown ap peared for the plaintiff and Attor neys Brownell, D'Arcy and Bingham appeared for tho defendants. Denies Motion. Judge Galloway also rendered a decision In tho case of the motion in terposed In the case of Walter P. Williams against Ella O. Wlliams, an action for divorce. The plaintiff in this case through his attorney, Car,ey F. Martn had moved to strike out the answer.
