PAgebVght HIGH PRICE FOR PRIZE APPLES Car-of Spitzenbergs Raised In the Rogue River Valley Sells for $3.40 a Box. Tho car of Spitzenbergs grown by Tronson & Guthrio In tho Rogue river valloy, which carried off tho grand sweepstakes prize of $1,000 against all competitors, at tho Spo kano Fruit Fair, was offored for the holiday trado of Washington, D. C, and sold at record prices which paid tho growers $3.40 a box f. o. b. Eaglo Point. This did not include tho $1,000 prlzo taken at Spokane. Tho salo was handled by Crutch flold & Woolfolk, of Pittsburg, Pa., who sold tho car to J. It. Sherwood, of Washington, who disposed of It at romarkablo prices. As soon as Mr. Sherwood con tracted for tho car ho issued a cir cular letter to tho trado, explaining that thcso apples had been consid ered by oxport Judges tho finest ex hibit that had ever been soon in the world, To this ho added an invita tion to all of tho fancy fruit trade, including foreign legations, fashion able clubs, restaurants, including that In tho capltol building itself, to visit his salesrooms and see "this raro exhibit of tho celebrated Oro gon apples." Many Saw Fruit, As congress Was in session thoro woro a great many distinguished foreigners in Washington, so that tho fruit was placed boforo tho rep resentatives of ovory civilized coun try in tho world, including, of courso, those of tho United States. What tho Jrado thought of tho car Is Bhown by tho record prices paid. It Is of further intorest to know that whoroaB this car was offered to ovory applo buyer In Now York City, thoro was not ono of thorn who could afford to touoh tho car at tho prlco askod. This demonstrates the fallacy of tho ldoa so common among tho producors of fancy fruit ovorywhoro that Now York Is tho only fruit markot which can offor extreme prices and dvnonstnitos tho value of a Bciontiflo mnrkoting sys tem wh'ch loaves nothing to chanco or to tradition, but seeks and dis covers tho top valuo whorovor it may bo found. This wns a mngnl flcont car of fruit. Tho car netted $2,176, to which may bo added tho $1,000 prlzo( making a not roturn to tho growor of $3,170, or nearly $5 a box. Tho north bound Albany-Spring-flold train ran Into and killed two horses on tho farm of L. T. Berry, just south of Plalnvlow, Monday morning, and passengors on tho train did not oven notice a jar.
