These figures aro Jnots taken from guess-work, but from tho results of a systematic can vass of Salem curried on by the Journal for the past month by a man experienced in this line of work. Tho figures aro a result obtained on an adding machine. The total numbei of new buildings is about 450. Tho final numbor of new buildings was a little larger than the number stated in the statis tics shown at tho bottom of page 2, Section 3, as a few more wore added after this section of the paper was printed. Altogether there were about 125 more new buildings built during the year 1909 than during the year 19 OS. These policies have hurt tho chances of Salem, but may bo overcomo by more reasonable and business-like treat ment.
