In the annual report of the State Board of Health, the pure water' question Is brought to lsauo strong ly. The following report regarding the typhoid fever disease has been dealt with in detail by the board: board: The board has ondoavored .during the past year to secure full report regarding this disease, but tho re sults havo not boon what was de sired, nor what was to' havo been ox pec tod of health offlcors and physi cians throughout die stato. Of 697 cases reportod, 124 deaths occurred. Tho avenues through which the Infection Is conveyed in Individual cases are of utmost importance in controlling further spread of the di sease from a given source. In Its commercial aspects, typhoid fever is second only to tuberculosis. It is expensive to the Individual and to the community. It is by far the most serious of all the acute infec tious diseases In its mortality, and when once established In a commun ity, tho likllhood of its roappoaranco after long poriods of tjmo 1b always to bo foarod. Whole communities are liable to Its ravages from a singlo case in the family of a dairyman, and water supplies that are not absolutely pro tected are likely at any time to be come infected: and when tho dan gerous character of the convalescent typhoid ferer patient Is considered, it certainly becomes tho duty of health boards and physicians to use every effort possible for its control. The board In this connection has QoiiHtantly urged that all cities and towns, especially, should Becure their water supplies from an abso lutely pure sourco. and should dl- reotly control all dairies supplying milk. Statistics collectod by tho board from G3 cltlos and towns in tho stale revouled the fact that but two of these had tholr water supplies regularly inspected by tholr health otileer. NogUgenco on tho part of olty ofllclals in thin particular Is the rule, and it Is ouly wheu an opl domie of typhoid fevor is present or seems imminent thut tho avorago city council pays tho loast attention to this Important part of their du ties as public sorvauts. In 45 of the smaller cities aud towns, with a combined population of approxi mately 75.000, having a. municipal water system, It was found that less than ono-third tho numbor of ty phoid fever casoa existed per 1,000. as compared with 15 towns, with an approximate population of 70,000, I using wator from individual woIIb. I It Is hoped that all cltios and ' towns throughout tho stato will realize tho valuo of a pure water supply, as tho most Important pro tection posslblo against this dlosaso. Deaths. During the year, 9470 doatha have been reportod to the board, 2934 males and 203G fomnlos. Of this miinbar 80 males nnd 1C fe males bolonged to other than the white race. Of tho total number of deaths, 494, or ton per oont of all deaths, wore duo to dlsoasoa of tho digestive systom; 290, or six por cent, from diseases of tho kldnoy and gonlto-urlnary tract; 282, or five por cent, from old ago: 448, or nino per cont, from oxternal causoa, accidents, suicides, etc; 184. or 3.7 por cont, from dlsoasoa Incident to oarly Infancy, i, o., under one year. Thoro wore 1319 doaths, or 26 por cont, from gonoral diseases; of theso 121, or 2 per cent of doaths from all gonoral causos, woro duo to typhoid fovor; 70 from dlphthorla; C30, or 10 8-10 por cont, from tu berculosis; und of this numbqr 447 deaths Woro from pulmonary tltuor culosla; 202, or 5 per cent, from cancor nnd othor rangljgnoht tu- ?iors; 646, or 11 par cant, woro ram diseases of the nervous sys tem; 510. or 10 per cent, from dl Hoasos of circulatory systom; 554, or about 11 per cont, from diseases of tho respiratory system. It la less to your crodlt to bo ready to fight than to bo ready to bo ready to work.
